Thursday, June 24, 1999 New deputy hits jackpot in first drug bust RANGER - Newly hired Eastland County Deputy Sheriff David Rollins
hit the jackpot with his first drug arrest, Sheriff Wayne Bradford
said. While searching a 1989 Chevrolet pickup truck and travel trailer
he had stopped for a traffic violation, Rollins discovered a fully
operational, mobile drug lab, the sheriff said. "The trailer contained methamphetamine and plenty of chemicals
to make more," he said. Bradford said the trailer was equipped with an air conditioner
in each end, as well as a police scanner so the "cook"
could monitor law enforcement radio transmissions while he or
she mixed chemicals. The travel "has the whole works" and could be moved
at a moment's notice, the sheriff said. Rollins stopped the rig
in Ranger about 7:30 p.m. The driver and lone occupant, Deana Walton Thomas, 37, of Ranger,
was charged with manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance.
She was jailed under $100,000 bond. Bradford indicated he will seek to have the vehicle and trailer
forfeited to the state for being used to transport contraband.
The truck is not registered to Thomas, he said.
