Wednesday, May 26, 1999 Albany junior chosen to be congressional page By KATHI STAPP Correspondent ALBANY Albany High School junior Tim Miler has been
selected as a congressional page for the U.S. House of Representatives
this summer. The former student council president was selected from 23 applicants
for the honor, U.S. Rep. Charles Stenholm announced. Five finalists went through rigorous personal interviews before
the final selection was made. Miler was nominated by Albany Superintendent
Jeri Pfeifer and high school Principal Dean Blair. Stenholm said this years may be one of the most interesting
summer sessions of his 20-year term in Congress, so Miler couldnt
be coming to Washington at a better time. Milers selection was announced at a surprise assembly
at the high school. I was floored, Miler said. I had no idea
until I walked into the assembly and saw Congressman Stenholm
on stage. Then I knew! Although there are more than 400 members of Congress, only
72 pages serve at any one time. Pages are paid $1,178 per month, with deductions for taxes
and residence hall expenses. Miler will spend much of his time in the Longworth Building,
where Stenholms office is located. He will be responsible
for preparing the house chamber before each session and assisting
Stenholm when he is called to the floor. The experiences he will gain this summer will last a
lifetime, said his mother, Pam Davis. Miler will have some other Washington experiences. For 11 days he will participate in the Global Leadership Conference.
Last year he participated in the National Leadership Conference
in Washington and was selected to attend this summers world
conference. Part of it will be held at the American University in Washington,
and part at Manhattan College in New York City. Students from
30 countries will participate. Miler is a member of the AHS golf team and was a member of
the Academic Challenge team that went to the finals this year. Hes also been involved in UIL literary events, the one-act
play, PALS peer mentoring program for younger students and ADAPT,
the drug and alcohol abstinence program.
