Wednesday, April 14, 1999 Storms rumble through area Mother Nature reminded Big Country residents what its
like to live in West Texas by providing high wind and heavy rain
Tuesday night. Two storms within 15 minutes of another let loose a variety
of hailstones, ranging from pea-sized to baseball-sized in western
counties. Storm clouds began developing about 7:55 p.m. in Mitchell County
and moved along Interstate 20 through Nolan County and then northeast
into Jones County, said the National Weather Service. The second line of storms formed over Fisher County. Two tornadoes were spotted on the ground near Rotan between
8:15 and 8:40 p.m., the NWS said. A dispatcher with the Fisher
County Sheriffs Office, however, said he only knew of one
touchdown west of Hobbs. Lightning knocked down numerous power
lines, he said. Funnel clouds were spotted west of Anson and Loraine, and east
of Sweetwater, officials said.
