Wednesday, June 2, 1999 Wind, hail cause damage in area counties Storms caused wind and hail damage in at least four area counties
Monday night, but little precipitation was recorded. High winds downed nine electric poles a mile south of Merkel
leaving several homes without power from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Wind also overturned a small tin building at a Lone Star Gas
substation in Merkel, breaking off a pipe valve and causing natural
gas to spew into the air. The leak was repaired in about 45 minutes. Merkel police and
firefighters cordoned off the area while repairs were being made,
but Lone Star officials said the threat of fire was negligible. Sweetwater vehicles were dented by hail that was at least the
size of golf balls. Id say the damage was pretty extensive, Pat
Carter, Nolan County Jail administrator said of the 8 p.m. storm. Homes were damaged and windows were broken out by hail as a
storm passed between Roby and Rotan. Fisher County Sheriff Gene
Pack said the hail was larger than golf balls, but smaller than
a baseballs. Pack said high winds also broke three electric poles in the
same area. Rainfall was measured at .3 inches in Roby. Throckmorton County Judge Trey Carrington said hail damaged
wheat near Woodson and broke the window of the sheriffs
patrol vehicle. Just .2 inches of rain were recorded in Throckmorton.
