Today's Obituaries (June 14, 1999)

Mamie Walker Patterson

Mamie Walker Patterson, 89, of Abilene, died Friday at an Abilene nursing center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy. 277 South with Farren Sadler officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Mrs. Patterson was born in Biardstown in Lamar County. She graduated from high school in Paris, Texas, and attended Paris Junior College. She moved to Merkel in 1927, to Abilene in 1936, and to Lawn in 1946. She taught at Blair School for a few years. She was the widow of C.O. “Pat” Patterson Sr., whom she married on Dec. 18, 1936, in Merkel. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Merkel.

Survivors include one son, Dr. C.O. “Pat” Patterson Jr. of College Station; one daughter, Sally Weiss of Halton City; two sisters, Mrs. Velma Johnson of Abilene and Mrs. Robbie Murphy of Buffalo Gap; one grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Mary Hazel Hamilton Rainey

HASKELL — Mary Hazel Hamilton Rainey, 85, died Saturday at her residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. Ross Anderson and Joel Rister officiating. Burial will be in the Weinert Cemetery, directed by Holden-McCauley Funeral Home of Haskell.

Mrs. Rainey was born in Haskell County. She married Russel Jonathan Rainey on July 11, 1931, in Haskell. She had been a resident of the Weinert Community for 68 years. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband of Weinert; three daughters, Lora Lois Timberlake of Houston, Rubye Joyce Anderson of Weinert, and Janice Margaret Isbell of Potosi; two sons, Luther Lewis “Bud” Rainey of Friona and William Russel “Bill” Rainey of Abilene; one brother, John Morton Hamilton of Lyford; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to West Texas Rehab in Abilene.

Luther G. Purdom

EASTLAND — Luther G. Purdom, 80, of Carbon died Sunday at his home.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Bakker Funeral Home Chapel in Eastland with the Revs. Jimmy Maples and Jody Forbes officiating. Burial will be in the Murray Cemetery in Carbon.

Mr. Purdom was born in Rector, Ark., and moved to Texas as a young child, moving to Eastland in the late 1920s. He married Margaret Hobbs on Feb. 26, 1946. He retired from Pullman Salvage Company in 1983 after 44 years’ service.

Survivors include his wife of Carbon; three sons, Larry Purdom of Abilene, and Donnie Purdom and Mike Purdom both of Eastland; three daughters, Glenda Horton of Austin, Sharon Anderson of Dilly, and Lisa Purdom of Stamford; one sister, Margaret Ensor of Eastland; 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Ben Hendrix

MAY — Ben Hendrix, 67, formerly of Midland, died Friday in a Houston hospital following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Mr. Hendrix married Kay Faulkner on Dec. 1, 1970, in Midland. He was the former owner of Basin Ice Company in Midland and had been a resident of May for three years, following his retirement.

Survivors include his wife of May; three sons, Billy Hendrix of Paris, Larry Hendrix of Midland, and Chat Hendrix of Kilgore; two daughters, Gwen Hughes and Shelia Hendrix both of Midland; three sisters, Loyette Olive and Lovinia Griffin both of Lake Brownwood, and Mary Nolan of Andulusia, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mary ‘Leona’ Callaway

CISCO — Mary “Leona” Callaway, 89, died Saturday in an Eastland hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Bob Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, directed by Chambers-Wilcox Funeral Directors of Cisco.

Mrs. Callaway was born in Cisco. She was the widow of Rube Callaway, whom she married in December 1929. She was a housewife and a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include two sons, Van Callaway of Cisco and Coy Callaway of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Lillian Pence of Indianapolis, Ind. and Ila Wilson of Cisco; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Isabel Jane Forgey

BROWNWOOD — Isabel Jane Forgey, 77, died Sunday in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Greenleaf Cemetery with the Rev. R.J. Elkins officiating, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.

Mrs. Forgey was born in Benton, Ohio, and had lived in Brownwood since 1976. She was the widow of James Forgey, whom she married in Parker County on July 23, 1955. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Sherman of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Ruby E. Harris of Fort Worth and Anna Bell Richards of Brownwood; two brothers, Charles Stevens of Columbus, Ohio and Donald Stevens; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a niece.

John E. Creagh

BRECKENRIDGE — John E. Creagh, 69, died Saturday in an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the First United Presbyterian Church in Breckenridge with the Rev. Andy Channer officiating. Burial will be in Breckenridge Cemetery, directed by Morehart Mortuary of Breckenridge.

Mr. Creach was born in Tulia, attended school in Hearne and graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1948. He also attended Tarleton State College. He is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Ruth Hicks on Feb. 15, 1953, in Abilene. He worked for the Corral Drive-In and Soxie Vincent as an electrician. He formed Creagh Electric in 1960. He served as deacon and treasurer at the First United Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of Breckenridge; one daughter, Sharee Cummings of Grapevine; one son, James Creagh II of Breckenridge; one brother, Buster Creagh of Horseshoe Bay; three sisters, Martha Klatt of Weatherford, Joan Stuard of Horseshoe Bay, and Peggy Creagh of Breckenridge; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund of the First United Presbyterian Church in Breckenridge and may be left with the funeral home.

Lena Roberts Basham, 94, of Clyde, died Sunday at a Clyde nursing center. Arrangements are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Juanita Bailes

BRECKENRIDGE — Juanita Bailes died Sunday in a Fort Smith, Ark. hospital. Arrangements are pending with Morehart Mortuary of Breckenridge.

James S. Blair

BRECKENRIDGE — James S. Blair, 74, died Sunday in a local hospital. Services are pending with Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home of Breckenridge.

Doris Wynelle Hellums

HASKELLl — Doris Wynelle Hellums died Sunday at her residence. Services are pending with Holden-McCauley Funeral Home of Haskell.

Lecil Lee

STEPHENVILLE — Lecil Lee, 85, died Sunday at his residence. Masonic graveside rites will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Lipan, directed by Lacy Funeral Home of Stephenville.

Augustine Weber Lopez

DE LEON — Augustine Weber Lopez, 71, died Saturday in a local hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in DeLeon with the Rev. Philip McNamara officiating. Burial will be in DeLeon Cemetery, directed by Nowlin Funeral Home of DeLeon.

Phillis Mayhugh Osteen

BRECKENRIDGE — Phillis Mayhugh Osteen, 50, died Sunday in a local hospital. The body will be cremated and private services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are through Morehart Mortuary of Breckenridge.

Jerry R. Herrington

BRECKENRIDGE — Jerry R. Herrington, 64, died Saturday in a Dublin nursing home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, at the Macedonia Cemetery, directed by Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home of Breckenridge.

Fred Blackwell

RANGER — Fred Blackwell, 48, died Saturday as a result of a boating accident. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Mesquite and Rusk Street Church of Christ in Ranger with Ken Evans officiating. Burial will be in Alameda Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home of Ranger.

Nieves Garcia

BIG SPRING — Nieves Garcia, 86, died Saturday in a Lubbock hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Iglesia Bautista Lafe with the Rev. Andres Rodriguez officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park, directed by Myers & Smith Funeral Home of Big Spring.
