Cross country roundup: Abilene High girls
capture state berth
LUBBOCK The Abilene High girls are headed to the state
cross country meet next week for the second time in four years.
The Lady Eagles, led by a third-place finish by Kristen Adkins,
placed third as a team at the Region I-5A meet at Mae Simmons
Park to qualify for state.
Not bad for a girl with a chipped bone in her foot,
AHS coach Rene McAden said of Adkins. She ran a great race
today. We had four in the top 25 and then had to hang on
for a 66 with our fifth runner to take third.
Also placing in the top 25 for Abilene High were Shanon Watson
17th, Michelle Belsha 24th and Tiffany ONiell 25th. Kelly
Garcia took 13th for Cooper, which finished eighth as a team.
Dwayne Benoit of Cooper is also going to state. He placed fifth
in the Region I-5A boys race. The Cooper boys narrowly missed
earning a trip to state, placing fifth but just 17 points out
of third place.
Region I-4A
LUBBOCK The Stephenville girls took third to qualify
for state. Mandy McGeen of Stephenville took seventh to lead the
Honey Bees.
Region I-3A
LUBBOCK Wylies Lisa Bull and Clydes Michael
Hunt each finished eighth in the Region I-3A cross country meet
Saturday at Mae Simmons Park to qualify for the state meet.
The state meet is next week at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
I was really pleased with the way Lisa ran today,
Wylie coach Stacy Bryan said. She got a great start and
she stayed up there. I kept telling her not to let anybody pass
her. She was really nervous before the race, but she calmed down
and ran a really great race. Thats one of the best times
that shes had.
Region I-2A
LUBBOCK Jorge Hernandez of Eula won the Region I-2A
boys title, leading the Pirates to a third-place team finish,
qualifying the Eula team for state. Brandon Raymond of Jim Ned
just missed qualifying for state when he took 11th.
Casey McCarty of Hawley won the Region I-2A girls race. Also
qualifying for state was Brittany Densman of Eula, who placed
sixth.
