Cross country roundup: Abilene High girls capture state berth

LUBBOCK — The Abilene High girls are headed to the state cross country meet next week for the second time in four years.

The Lady Eagles, led by a third-place finish by Kristen Adkins, placed third as a team at the Region I-5A meet at Mae Simmons Park to qualify for state.

“Not bad for a girl with a chipped bone in her foot,” AHS coach Rene McAden said of Adkins. “She ran a great race today. “We had four in the top 25 and then had to hang on for a 66 with our fifth runner to take third.

Also placing in the top 25 for Abilene High were Shanon Watson 17th, Michelle Belsha 24th and Tiffany O’Niell 25th. Kelly Garcia took 13th for Cooper, which finished eighth as a team.

Dwayne Benoit of Cooper is also going to state. He placed fifth in the Region I-5A boys race. The Cooper boys narrowly missed earning a trip to state, placing fifth but just 17 points out of third place.

Region I-4A

LUBBOCK — The Stephenville girls took third to qualify for state. Mandy McGeen of Stephenville took seventh to lead the Honey Bees.

Region I-3A

LUBBOCK —Wylie’s Lisa Bull and Clyde’s Michael Hunt each finished eighth in the Region I-3A cross country meet Saturday at Mae Simmons Park to qualify for the state meet.

The state meet is next week at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

“I was really pleased with the way Lisa ran today,” Wylie coach Stacy Bryan said. “She got a great start and she stayed up there. I kept telling her not to let anybody pass her. She was really nervous before the race, but she calmed down and ran a really great race. That’s one of the best times that she’s had.”

Region I-2A

LUBBOCK — Jorge Hernandez of Eula won the Region I-2A boys title, leading the Pirates to a third-place team finish, qualifying the Eula team for state. Brandon Raymond of Jim Ned just missed qualifying for state when he took 11th.

Casey McCarty of Hawley won the Region I-2A girls race. Also qualifying for state was Brittany Densman of Eula, who placed sixth.

Region II-2A

ARLINGTON — Both Staci Benefield and Jessica Stovall of Cisco qualified for the Class 2A state cross-country meet by finishing in the top ten at the Region II-2A meet held Saturday.

Benefield took fourth place, and Stovall was seventh overall.

Region IV-2A

SAN ANTONIO — Jimmy Rodriguez of Winters took fourth at the Region IV-2A meet to qualify for state.

Region I-A

LUBBOCK — Katherine Duncan of Roscoe won her fourth consecutive Region I-A girls cross country title. Lyndi Stuart of Roby also qualified for state by placing seventh.

Region II-A

ARLINGTON — Raynaldo Lopez of Ranger and Allen Puebla of Rule qualified for the Class A state cross-country meet, both finishing among the top ten boys at the Region II-A meet Saturday.

Lopez finished in seventh place, and Puebla took ninth.
