Adkins, Benoit take 5A top-10 medals

ROUND ROCK — Kristen Adkins of Abilene High and Dwayne Benoit of Cooper both earned medals Saturday as top-10 finishers in the Class 5A state cross country meet at Old Settlers Park.

Adkins ran a school-record 11:30 over the 2-mile course to finish fifth in the 5A girls race, leading the Lady Eagles to an eighth-place finish as a team.

“Eighth is our best finish ever,” said Abilene High coach Rene McAden, who guided the Lady Eagles to their third state-meet appearance in the 1990s. “We had a couple who were pretty sick, but the weather was beautiful and we ran well. After Kristen, our next five who came in Saturday all return next year.”

McAden said the state meet proved how tough Region I-5A is. Marcus and Amarillo High, who finished ahead of Abilene High at the Region I-5A meet, place 1-2 at the state meet. And four of the top five individuals were from Region I, including Adkins in fifth place.

Benoit also received a medal, placing eighth in the Class 5A boys race in a time of 15:55 over the 3-mile course.

The only other Big Country medal-winners Saturday were Jimmy Rodriguez of Winters, who was sixth in the Class 2A boys race, and Katherine Duncan of Roscoe, who placed fourth in the Class A girls race.

Eula’s Brittany Densman just missed a medal in the Class 2A girls race, placing 11th. Also in the Class 2A girls race, Staci Benefield of Cisco was 15th, Jessica Stovall of Cisco 30th and Casey McCarty of Hawley a disappointing 56th.

Lyndi Stuart of Roby was 24th in the Class A girls race.

Lisa Bull of Wylie placed 19th in the Class 3A girls race.

“I was so proud of the way she finished,” Wylie coach Stacey Bryan said of Bull. “She ran so hard. She passed a lot of people in the end to finish in the top 20. We were really pleased.”

Bull ran a 12:30, her third-best time ever.

Clyde’s Michael Hunt placed 18th in the Class 3A boys race while Brandon Raymond, of Jim Ned, was 61st in the Class 2A boys race.

Besides Abilene High’s eighth-place finish in the Class 5A girls competition, the Eula boys took 10th as a team in Class 2A and the Priddy girls fifth in Class A. Ballinger’s girls were 12th in Class 3A. Stephenville took seventh in the Class 4A girls competition.
