Best cross country runners to face off
By AL PICKETT
Sports Editor

There should be some great races Saturday at the University Interscholastic League’s state cross country meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

But no race will match two longer-running rivals than the first race of the day, the Class 2A girls race pitting Casey McCarty of Hawley and Brittany Densman of Eula. The two have been running against each other for four years as rivals in District 8-2A. Each have won the district title twice, and both have been to state four times.

This year alone the two have met seven times, with McCarty winning four and Densman three times. McCarty won the Region I-2A meet last week in Lubbock, while Densman was sixth.

Eula should also have a top contender in the 2A boys race, too. Freshman Jorge Hernandez was the surprise winner at the Region I-2A meet, leading the Pirates to a third-place finish and a team berth in the state meet.

Another top contender at the state meet Saturday is Roscoe’s Katherine Duncan in the Class A girls race. She’s also making her fourth consecutive trip to the state meet, having won state cross country championships as a freshman and a sophomore.

The Abilene High girls, led by Kristen Adkins, is making its third trip to the Class 5A state meet in the 1990s. The Lady Eagles finished ninth in 1996 and 11th in 1992.

“I’d like to get a medal,” said Abilene High coach Rene McAden. “The favorites are Amarillo, Marcus, Klein, The Woodlands, Georgetown and Kingwood. Our goal is for the rest of the team to get on Kristen’s heels and stay there. I think Kristen can finish in the top 10, depending on how her foot is feeling.”

Adkins has been running the last several weeks with a chipped bone in her foot.

Abilene High finished third at the Region I-5A meet behind Amarillo High and Lewisville Marcus.

Cooper’s Dwayne Benoit, making his first trip to the Class 5A boys state meet, is shooting for a medal, which means a top-10 finish.

“He’s shooting for the best,” Cooper coach Eric Bengs said, “but he’ll have his work cut out. He’ll see some great competition.”

Lisa Bull of Wylie is making her second trip to the Class 3A state meet.
