Aces 7, Prairie Dogs 6

De Leon’s bomb ends Dogs’ winning streak

ALEXANDRIA, La. — The Abilene Prairie Dogs’ hold on third place in the Texas-Louisiana League standings was brief thanks to a newcomer to the Alexandria Aces.

Ray De Leon, just signed by the Aces Monday, blasted a game-winning home run off Tom Naff in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Alexandria a 7-6 victory over the Dogs.

The win moved the Aces back into a third place tie with Abilene, which had its three-game winning streak come to an end.

The game proved to be a back-and-forth affair all night long. The Aces grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run double by Brent Trosclair.

Abilene quickly tied the score in the top of the third when Brandon McNab singled. Rick Pitts followed with a single to right and after Malvin Matos mishandled the ball, McNab came all the way around to score, cutting the deficit in half.

Rhodney Donaldson walked to put runners at the corners, but Pitts was gunned down at the plate on a double steal.

Matt Hyers followed with a double to left that evened the score at 2-2.

The Prairie Dogs went ahead briefly on the first of two home runs from Guy Giuffre in the top of the fourth, but Robert Hewes clubbed a home run in the bottom of the inning to knot the game at 3-3.

The Aces took a 6-3 advantage in the fifth on a two-run double from De Leon and a sacrifice fly by Wil Roland, but Guiffre’s second homer of the contest tied the score at 6 in the top of the eighth.

Toby McDermott started strong for the Dogs but received a no-decision.

After striking out the side in the first inning, the lefty ran into brief trouble in the second, but still managed to record a pair of strikeouts. He pitched seven innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits. McDermott walked five and finished with nine strikeouts.

The teams will close out the series today before the Prairie Dogs head to Mississippi to play Greenville in a three-game series.

While the Dogs collected 14 hits off two Alexandria pitchers, the defense didn’t show much support. Hyers finished the game with three errors, which led to a pair of unearned runs for the Aces.
