Dewhurst has been charged with driving while intoxicated after
an accident last week that injured a Hondo couple. Tammy Dewhurst pleaded innocent to the misdemeanor charge,
said her attorney, Roy Minton. Mrs. Dewhurst, who has no record of drunken driving, faces
180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine if convicted. Mrs. Dewhurst was northbound on State Highway 16 near Fredericksburg
when her 1995 Mercedes went out of control, crossed the center
line and was broadsided by a 1989 Buick driven by 77-year-old
Elsie Heath, state law enforcement reported. The impact sent Mrs. Dewhurst's car into a ditch, where it
rolled before landing on its roof with her trapped inside. DPS
troopers said they found evidence of alcohol inside the car. Mrs. Dewhurst suffered minor injuries. Mrs. Heath and her husband,
81-year-old Jack Heath, were treated and released from Sid Peterson
Hospital in Kerrville. Minton said Mrs. Dewhurst was released on a personal recognizance
bond. A pre-trial hearing is set for Sept. 14. Gillespie County Attorney Jay Weinheimer declined to give details
about the case, saying, I'm still investigating. DPS has said it will suspend Mrs. Dewhurst's license because
she refused a breath test, but Minton said that hadn't happened
yet.
