Texas may join other states in big millennium lottery jackpot

By STEPHANIE ELIZONDO GRIEST

Associated Press Writer

AUSTIN (AP) — Somebody in lottery land may bring in the millennium $300 million richer.

It could even be a Texan — if the executive director of the state's lottery commission gives her stamp of approval this month.

Linda Cloud, who wasn't available for comment Wednesday, will decide if Texas will participate in a multi-state, three-month lottery game tentatively called the Millennium Century Game.

A single winner could pull in four times Texas' record $75 million jackpot, according to Marcy Goodfleisch, the Texas Lottery Commission's spokeswoman.

Texas has been a loner in the lottery business since its games began in 1992, shunning multi-state games with monster jackpots like the popular, 20-state Powerball.

But Lotto Texas has seen its better days. Ticket sales have dropped 18 percent compared to last year, and Ms. Goodfleisch said officials expect the new game to renew interest with lapsed players as well as bring some revenue into the state.

“This New Year's Eve, we're going to experience what hasn't happened in 1,000 years, so it is fortunate timing that we can offer this game to our players,” she said.

In addition to Texas, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, New York and New Jersey have expressed “solid interest” in the game, she said. Virginia is another potential participant.

Millennium Century will used 100 balls for the years of the 20th century. The New Year's Eve jackpot will go to whomever picks the winning five numbers, Ms. Goodfleisch said.
