Cowboys lose another defensive end to injury

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Dallas defensive end Peppi Zellner has been lost for the season after tearing a knee ligament during practice.

Zellner tore his left anterior cruciate ligament during a pass rushing drill Monday, becoming the third defensive linemen the Cowboys have lost this year. The second-year pro is also the fifth Dallas player to suffer a torn ACL this season.

Chad Hennings (neck) and Leon Lett (sprained left knee), both defensive end starters, were already out. Lett sustained his injury during a practice session Nov. 8, just hours after Hennings was placed on injured reserve that day with what potentially is a career-threatening neck condition.

Running back Emmitt Smith didn't practice Monday, but that move was called precautionary after he was knocked unconscious in the 27-15 loss to Minnesota on Thanksgiving Day. He is expected to practice Wednesday and play this weekend at Tampa.

Coach Dave Campo said there is a chance that safety Darren Woodson, who broke his forearm Nov. 19 at Baltimore, could play Sunday.

“Woody will be day-to-day,” Campo said. “I think there's a possibility that he might play. But there are no guarantees.”

Campo also said tight end Jackie Harris would be listed as questionable. Harris sprained his knee against the Vikings last week.
