moments of grace
As I am writing, West Texas and most of
Texas is feeling the effects of a prolonged drought.
Far-below-average crops have been harvested
or in some instances, none at all. Complete herds of prize-winning
cattle have been sold due to lack of water in the stock tanks
and no grass in the pastures.
This has happened before. Habakkuk 3:17,
one of the minor Old Testament prophets, tells us that there may
be no food growing in the fields or cattle in the barns, but he
will still rejoice in his God.
Because of the drought, in April I plowed
up what was planted to be a good crop of wheat. I was plowing
in a location in the wheat field that I normally would not be
in until after wheat harvest.
There in a mesquite pasture at the edge
of the field I found a wild plum thicket that had obviously been
there for several years. My wife canned approximately 40 jars
of good wild plum jelly. I will enjoy it even more next year if
she can find a recipe using a sugar substitute.
In all things I rejoice in my God who gives
me blessings.
