Lady 'Cats dominating LSC competition, again

SAN ANGELO - The Abilene Christian University women's track team, which has long dominated the Lone Star Conference track meet, leads this year's competition by 37 points after five events.

The Lady Wildcats, who have not lost the LSC meet since women's track was introduced into the conference in 1983, qualified every runner in Friday's preliminaries and tallied 62 points in the finals. The ACU women are trailed by Texas A&M-Kingsville with 25 points while Tarleton State is in third, with 23 1/2.

The ACU men have won the last six LSC titles, but currently sit in third place with 26 points. Angelo State leads after five events with 50 points, followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville with 38. Tarleton State is currently fifth with 12 points. The Wildcats qualified 13 of 16 runners in Friday's prelims.

Of the five finals on Friday, the Lady Wildcats won three: the long jump, shot put and hammer throw.

Dawnyel Newhouse took the long jump with a leap of 20-0 3/4, Geraldine George won the shot with a throw of 47-11¤ and Selena Bettis claimed the No. 1 spot in the hammer throw, with a 157-8 effort.

Tarleton's Melissa Spencer took the 10,000 meters in a time of 20:04.14.

Terrance Woods and Barnebas Menjo took the two first-place finishes for the ACU men. Woods cleared 7-1 in the high jump and Menjo outran the competition in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:13.24.

The ACU teams will both attempt to defend their LSC titles today, when competition resumes at noon.
