Five Wildcats qualify for nationals
By Michael Wilson
Reporter-News Staff Writer

Terrance Woods doesn’t take losing lightly. Especially not when it occurs at the NCAA Division II national indoor championships.

The Abilene Christian University track standout was stripped of a chance to win the NCAA triple jump title two weeks ago by Tim Russan of St. Augestine’s, and Woods certainly hasn’t forgotten.

In fact, Woods reacted in the only way he knows how — he obliterated the NCAA Division II triple jump automatic qualifying mark of 50-10 by posting a 53-7 3/4 at Friday’s All-America City Track Classic at Elmer Gray Stadium to earn a guaranteed spot in the outdoor championships in the first meet of the season.

“I’m trying to make a statement now,” said Woods, who is the NCAA indoor high jump champion and placed first in that event Friday with a jump of 7-0 1/4 . “I have a new attitude for the outdoor season, and this is a new Terrance Woods.

“Anyone can have a bad day at nationals, and now I have to go out and prove that I’m the best.”

Woods wasn’t the only ACU athlete making a strong case at Friday’s meet. The Wildcats had four other individuals and a relay team automatically qualify for the outdoor national meet to be held May 25-27 in Raleigh, N.C.

Julieon Raeburn’s 46.48 earned him second place in the 400 Friday but was good enough to automatically qualify for nationals. John Kemboi paced the 1,500 field with a qualifying time of 3:47.16, and the 4x100 relay team also will be headed to nationals.

On the women’s side, Shawntel Newhouse qualified in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.81, while her sister Dawnyel’s mark of 20-3 3/4 was good enough to win the long jump and guarantee her a trip to Raleigh.

“Everything went well today and it’s good to have a meet like this to start the outdoor season,” Dawnyel Newhouse said. “We can compete anywhere, but it’s nice to have a performance like this in front of a home crowd. Now we don’t have to worry about qualifying for nationals later in the season and we can just concentrate on doing well.”

Qualifying early and easing future tension seemed to be the theme of the All-America City Classic on Friday. ACU coach Jon Murray said his team’s success in the season opening meet can only be a sign of good things to come.

“This is a great start for us,” Murray said. “It helps get us going on the right foot. Now we can pick our races from here on out instead of trying to catch the other qualifiers. Everyone is really excited about where we’re going and what we’re doing right now. All our hard work is paying off.”
