Sentencing in drug case involving ex-Cowboy

SHERMAN, Texas (AP) — Four men who worked for the same drug rings that supplied former Dallas Cowboys player Mark Tuinei with a lethal dose of heroin were sentenced to long prison terms.

Jesus Carbajal, Julian Solis Perez, Andres Milan and Favian Ramos each faced a maximum sentence of life in prison and a $4 million fine.

They had been charged with conspiracy to distribute heroin and cocaine.

Carbajal was sentenced Thursday by Judge Paul Brown in Sherman to life in prison. On Friday, Brown sentenced Perez and Milan to 11 year prison terms and Ramos to 12 years.

A lawyer for at least one of the defendants planned to appeal.

“We think the sentence is very unfair because we have contended all along that he was just an innocent bystander,” said Ramos' attorney, Michael Samonek.

According to testimony at the four-day trial, the men were part of two drug rings that operated in Dallas and Denton. Officials said the groups imported drugs from California and Mexico and then distributed them throughout North Texas.

Tuinei, a former offensive tackle for the Cowboys, died in 1999 after taking heroin and a form of the drug Ecstasy.
