Beltway Park church honored

Reporter-News Staff Report

Beltway Park Baptist Church was honored Monday night as the Church of the Year by the Abilene Baptist Association.

The congregation and other honorees were recognized during the 44th annual meeting of the association at Lytle South Baptist Church.

David McQueen, Beltway Park's pastor, accepted a plaque on behalf of his congregation from Charles Richardson, chairman of the ABA's communications committee. The committee annually selects award winners for the association.

Construction of a 1,300-seat auditorium for the congregation, originally a mission of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, is underway at Beltway Park. The congregation, which has a resident membership of 965, was cited for its high growth rate. The church had 558 members in 1999 and 638 members in 2000.

Worship attendance has grown from 550 in 1999 to 998 in 2001.

Also receiving awards were: A. E. Fogle Jr., First Baptist Church of Abilene, lay person of the year; the Revs. Rodney Watson of Lytle South Baptist Church and Steve Joiner of First Baptist Church of Buffalo Gap, pastors of the year; and Randy Packwood, associate pastor of Broadview Baptist Church of Abilene, staff person of the year.
