Firefighters rescue cat from hair-raising adventure in tree

Reporter-News Staff Report

Abilene firefighters pawed their rescue skills on a rather unusual victim Saturday.

Emmanuel DeLaCruz, 11, was at home about 4 p.m. when he heard a loud meowing. Thinking that “Zowy,” his kitten, might be calling, he looked outside and saw him stuck in a tree.

A fire department dispatcher told him that he should first try coaxing the cat down by putting food in the yard. After that didn’t work, he called back.

One fire engine came to the 1200 block of Burger, then another arrived because of the height involved.

“We usually don’t do this, but it’s been a really slow day,” firefighter Pete Beretta quipped after being raised 45 feet on the ladder truck to rescue the cat.
