Gov. Rick Perry requests three Texas counties be declared disaster areas

AUSTIN (AP) — Gov. Rick Perry on Sunday asked the federal government to declare three counties federal disaster areas in the wake of back-to-back winter storms that crippled northeastern parts of the state.

Perry requested the assistance for Bowie, Cass and Red River counties, first hit Dec. 12-14 when ice and snow snapped tree limbs, toppled power lines and knocked out electricity to thousands. Further damage was cause by a second ice storm on Christmas.

“The widespread damages affected nearly every citizen of these counties in some way. This Federal Disaster Declaration will help us to help these people,” Perry said in a release.

Areas granted federal disaster declarations qualify for housing assistance programs, grants, small business loans and other government help.

Tom Millwee, state coordinator with the Texas Department of Public Safety's Division of Emergency Management, said about 280,0000 residents were without electricity at one time or another during the storms.

He said the Texas Forest Service estimated timber losses of $46 million due to the wintry weather.

Emergency Management spokesman Don Rogers said Sunday that about 6,500 customers still did not have electricity in the three counties.
