Alton O. Clem

HAMLIN -- Alton O.Clem, 67, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at an Abilene hospital. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2002, at the Hamlin Church of Christ with Drew Tomlinson and John Greeson officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Stamford, directed by Foster-Adams Funeral Home.

Born March 2, 1935 in Quinland, Alton was a son of the late A.H. and Jessie Alice (Vick) Clem. He was a U.S. Army veteran and graduated from Stamford High School. Alton married Jeraldine "Jerry" Stewart July 12, 1974 in Lawton, Oklahoma. He moved to Hamlin from Sylvester in 1975. Alton was a former employee of Jones County and also worked for the City of Hamlin. He was a member of the Hamlin Church of Christ and the Hamlin V.F.W.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, and one grandson, Brad.

Survivors include his wife, Jeraldine Clem of Hamlin; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Allison and Brent Irvin of Friona, Kelly and Randy Brown of Abilene and Benji Clem of Austin; five stepdaughters and four sons-in-law, Ann Lindsey of Monahans, Sandra and Bob Huff of Abilene, Charlene and Ed Murray of Rule, Kathy and Jim Flower of Grand Prairie, and Debbie and Wayne Smith of Abilene; five sisters, Era Mitchell, Lucille Pryon, Estelle Beardon, all of Andrews, Winnie Langford of Lubbock and Edith Carruth of Marble Falls; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002 at the funeral home.

Patricia Bell

LUBBOCK -- Patricia Bell, 80, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002. Services were held Monday, April 8, 2002 at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Davis Price officiating. Burial will be in Bedford, Ind., at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bell was born June 13, 1921, in Lebanon, Ind. and graduated from Lebanon High School as valedictorian. She attended Indiana University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She married Renick Glenmore Bell on June 12, 1943.

After his death, she moved in 1978 from Bedford to Lubbock, TX, where she attended Texas Tech and worked as an accountant at several local firms until retiring. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

She was a bridge player and ACBL Life Master, who directed and played duplicate bridge at the Lubbock Bridge Center. She was a member of the Lubbock Women's Club and Lubbock Study Club. She also was a member of the Lubbock Chapter of the American Retired Federal Employees Association.

She is survived by four children, David Bell of Abilene, Doug Bell of Lubbock, Steven Bell of Farmer City, IL. and Becky Lormor of Richardson; a sister, Betty Powell of Lansing, Mich.; three brothers, Mac and Al McConnaha, both of Lebanon and Jim McConnaha of Merritt Island, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church; the American Cancer Society; or a charity of choice.

Mr. L.W. "Bob" Thompson

COLEMAN -- Mr. L.W. "Bob" Thompson, 91, died Friday, April 12, 2002 at Coleman County Medical Center. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Coleman City Cemetery Pavilion with Reverend Paul Smith, pastor of Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow, under the direction of Walker Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. Thompson was born July 20, 1910 in Fisk to the late Charlie Jefferson and Leona Thompson. He was a lifetime resident of Coleman County and was an independent contractor with the Santa Fe Freight Company. He married Frances Lee Conway October 19, 1929 in Coleman. She preceded him in death in 1998. Mr. Thompson was a Baptist.

Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Driskill of Coleman; two sisters, Marvell Craig and Miss Evelyn Thompson, both of Abilene; a brother, Virgil Thompson of Lubbock; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Leonard Wayne Thompson in 1980.

Dorothy "Dot" Price

Dorothy Janes Price, 77, of Abilene, died March 31, 2002 in Michigan after an illness. Services were held April 4th, at Elton Black Funeral Home in White Lake, Michigan.

She grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where she graduated from Central High School and attended Wayne Business Institute. She later moved to Arizona and then to Abilene in 1990. She was active in activities at Rose Park Senior Citizens, St. Paul United Methodist Church, TOPS, VFW and Wylie Schools.

Dot was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, Howard W. Price. She was previously married to Roland Krueger and Marvin Bourget.
Survivors include her sisters, Hazel Evans of Fort Myers, FL and Joan Stobart of Bonita Springs, FL; brothers, Robert Miller of Fort Myers, Thomas Miller of Shelby, MI; daughters, Carol Kelley of Canton, MI and Diana Kruger of Lansing, MI; grandchildren, Lea Giolito, Marc Kelley; great-grandchildren, Alyshe Lees and Alex Giolito; stepchildren, William Price of Abilene, David Price of Moreno Valley, CA, Marilyn Reinbolt of Embudo, NM and Howard Price, Jr. of Albuquerque, NM.

Brenda Joyce Archer

Brenda Joyce Archer died April 12, 2002 at Hendrick Medical Center.

Brenda was born July 24, 1957, to Jack and Leona Hickey of Crossville, Tennessee. She married John Robert Archer May 25, 1978, in Knoxville, Tennessee. After moving to Abilene, in 1985, Brenda was employed in medical facilities as an LVN.

Brenda is survived by her husband, John of Abilene; two sons, Jake and John Robert, presently residing in Houston; her parents, Jack and Leona Hickey of Crossville, Tennessee; a brother-in-law, George Archer, II of Nashville, Tenn.; and her mother and father-in-law, Sarah and George Archer, of Crossville, Tenn.

Memorial services will be held at a later date, with interment in Lenoir City,Tennessee.

Nola V. Pierson

TUSCOLA -- Nola V. Pierson, 99, died Friday, April 12, 2002 in Lafayette, Louisiana. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 15, 2002 at Tuscola Church of Christ with Jodie Boren officiating. Burial will be in Tuscola Cemetery, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pierson was born in Belton to M.O. and Drucilla McElroy Field on October 13, 1902. She married Sam Pierson, December 9, 1922 in Haskell and lived in Tuscola from 1922 to 1987, when she moved to Clyde. She later moved to Lafayette and resided with her daughter until her death. She was a hat trimmer and had worked for J. Lee Hat Shop and Roberts Hat Shop in Abilene. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Alford Pierson and Andy Joe Pierson; three sisters, Estelle Norman, Ida Mae Cavanaugh and Lorene Atkins; and a brother, Menard Field.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Dru Brotherton and husband, Al of Lafayette and Arlene Tyler and husband, Tim of San Antonio; two sons, Jimmy Pierson and wife, Sue of San Antonio and Bobby Pierson and wife, Lynita of DeLeon; one daughter-in-law, Sandy Pierson of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters, Willie J. Viney of Lubbock and Adelle Bogard of Clyde; one brother, George Field of Haskell; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Betty Jo Zehrer

KNOX CITY -- Betty Jo Zehrer, 76, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at a Knox City hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Hope Cemetery of Anson with Reverend Loren Gardner officiating, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home of Anson.

Born March 24, 1925, in Stamford, Betty was a daughter of the late Mell Spurgin and Katie Lee Gracey Barkley. She graduated from Anson High School and married Fred Francis Zehrer February 24, 1945 in Anson. He preceded her in death in 1980. Betty taught school in Anson, McCaulley and Lueders. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and moved to Knox City from Anson in 1990.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Mellinda and Randy Reed of Benjamon; one son, Fred Zehrer, III; three grandchildren, Barkley Pineda, Rachael (Chad) Dodson, and Chase Reed; and four great-grandchildren, Braleigh Dodson and Jayden Dodson, Kylee Dodson and Calee Pineda.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.

Mary E. Box

Mary E. Box, 79, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at her residence in Hamby, TX.

Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with Reverend Janice Kahl, Reverend Doris Miller, Dr. Terry Bratton and Jon Hutton officiating. Burial will be in Hamby Cemetery.

Mrs. Box was born on December 31, 1922, in Hamby, Texas, to David Marion and Altie Womack Gist. She attended school in Hamby and graduated from Abilene High School. She married Leslie Box in Abilene on November 4, 1948. Mrs. Box was a homemaker and a member of Hamby United Methodist Church. She attended Hamby Baptist Church in her latter years.

Mrs. Box was preceded in death by her husband; a son, John Kish; her parents; three brothers; and a sister.

Survivors include two sons, Joe Box and wife, Trudy of Hamby and Phil Box and wife, Roweeda, of Albuquerque, NM; a daughter, Carolyn Higginbotham and husband, Seaton, of Abilene; a daughter- in-law, Judy Kish; eight grandchildren, Ronda Kish, Shanna Sherman, Shawn Lewis, Chrissy Hutton, Misha Williams, Brooke Ferguson, Pam Kish, and Phillip Box; and eleven great- grandchildren.

Tommy Leon Powers Michael Henry Powers

Tommy Leon Powers and Michael Henry Powers, twin infant sons of Troy and Tara Powers of View, TX, died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at a local medical center.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Drummond Cemetery in View, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
The twins were born on April 11, 2002, in Abilene.

Survivors include their parents; a brother, Troy Devin Powers of View; a sister, Michaela Danette Powers of View; grandmothers, Virginia Powers and Myrta Johnson, both of Abilene; great- grandparents, Vernon and Peggy Barnes of Bradshaw; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The infants preceded their grandfather, Troy L. Powers, in death.
