PRCA changes ahead

By Harvey Johnston

A bull-riding tour with a minimum of 12 dates in 2003, a traveling rodeo tour format in 2004 and a reduction in the number of events required to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo were announced last week by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Board of Directors and PRCA event representatives.

Major changes included:

Bull Riding Tour — Beginning in 2003, a bull riding tour with a minimum of 12 telecast dates will be held in conjunction with existing rodeos.

Traveling Tour Format — The top 12 contestants from each event in the final 2003 World Standings will compete on an exclusive tour in 2004. Existing rodeos will be used.

Marketing Development — The PRCA adopted the formal title of ProRodeo for marketing and public relations purposes.

Rodeo Administration Changes — The number of rodeos that will count toward Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification has been lowered from 125 to 75 in the roughstock events and 100 to 50 in the timed-events. More info at www.prorodeo.com.

Aggies win title

Two Texas A&M University coeds vying in the same event won the women’s team title in the College National Finals Rodeo last week in Casper, Wyo.

Senior Kelsey Cox of Del Rio and Johna Reeves, a freshman from Bay City, combined their efforts in the Goat Tying short go-round to place second and fourth, respectively. They scored a collective 450 points for Texas A&M University’s first national team championship in rodeo.

Texas A&M competes in the Southern Region of the NIRA, which consists of the eastern half of Texas.

Western Texas College in Snyder placed 7th in the women’s division, Texas Tech University placed 9th, and Tarleton State University placed 16th.

In the men’s division, Western Texas finished 14th and Howard College was 21st.

The Abilene-area NIRA schools compete in the Southwest Region.
