Elizabeth Brumbaugh, a 14-year-old freshman-to-be at Fort Worth’s All Saints Episcopal School, won the cutting championship of the 40th annual Texas State 4-H Horse Show Sunday in Abilene.

A resident of Weatherford, she warmed up for the 18-year event with a finalist performance Tuesday in the Junior Youth Class of the National Cutting Horse Association Summer Spectacular Show in Fort Worth.

On Wednesday night, she took the Reserve Championship in the NCHA Sponsor’s Cutting riding Jerry Durant’s champion stallion, Snack Box. She was also a finalist in the NCHA Super Stakes in April in the 5- and 6-year-old Amateur Class.

A total of 29 boys and girls cutting together started Sunday’s cutting class. Sixteen cutters with a score of 120.5 went to the finals.

Brumbaugh scored 134 in the go-round and topped the field riding from the 16th position for a winning 146 score.

Judges for the cutting were B.F. Yates of Bryan and Gary Potter of College Station.

Yates was one of the founders of the State 4-H Horse Program. Potter is on the faculty in the horse education department at Texas A&M University.

Training video

A pair of videographers are at the 4-H Horse Show this week to make a series of instructional tapes on the various activities of the extensive equestrian show.

Dr. Pete Gibbs, Texas A&M University Extension Horse Specialist, said copies of the tapes will be furnished to all county extension offices.
