Rylander announces unclaimed property auction

AUSTIN (AP) - Unclaimed property appraised at more than $750,000 is on the auction block.

Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander said Monday that the property -- including rare coins and historic documents -- has been kept in unclaimed safe deposit boxes. More than 210,000 items will be auctioned Saturday in Houston.

"Unclaimed safe deposit box contents are turned over to the state, and we use every reasonable means to locate the rightful owners," Rylander said. "But if the owners can't be found, I sell these items so the auction proceeds can be put to good use to educate our Texas school children and provide other vital state services."

Those interested in the items can bid either in person at the Sam Houston Race Park, or online at http://www.window.state.tx.us.

AUSTIN (AP) -- Texas will share in a $142 million national settlement of a lawsuit that alleged a conspiracy to inflate compact disc prices.

Texas, 39 other states and three territories filed the lawsuit two years ago in New York federal court, accusing the music company distributors and retailers of entering into illegal conspiracies to increase the prices of prerecorded music.

Named in the lawsuit were distributors Bertelsmann Music Group, Inc., EMI Music Distribution, Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corp., Sony Music Entertainment, Inc., Universal Music Group and retailers Transworld Entertainment Corp., Tower Records and Musicland Stores Corp.

Details of the settlement must be worked out and approved by the courts before Texans will know what the state gets from the deal, Texas Attorney General John Cornyn spokesman Tom Kelley said.

AUSTIN (AP) -- Gov. Rick Perry on Monday announced the appointment of three people to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

The commission establishes minimum standards for the construction, maintenance and operation of county jails, and standards for the custody and treatment of prisoners.

The appointees are: Dr. Michael Seale of Houston; William Morrow of Midland; and Charles Sebesta of Caldwell.

The appointments must be confirmed by the state Senate.
