Trial date set for wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A trial date has been set for pro wrestler "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, charged with hitting his wife earlier this year.

Making his first court appearance since being charged, Austin said on Friday that he has reconciled with his wife of two years, Debra Gale Williams. He recently dropped divorce proceedings against her.

"We're doing great, as a matter of fact," he said. "I just want to get past this (assault charge)."

The 37-year-old from San Antonio is set for trial Oct. 9.

Austin, whose real name is Steve Williams, appeared in relatively good spirits as his lawyer met with prosecutor Scott Simpson and County Court-at-Law Judge Bill C. White, the San Antonio Express-News reported in its Saturday editions.

The misdemeanor charge, assault causing bodily injury, stems from an argument with his wife June 15 at the couple's home. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound wrestler is accused of hitting his wife several times with his hands.

Simpson said guilty verdict could land Austin in jail for up to a year. The wrestler, who is no longer in the ring, also could face a $4,000 fine.
