PLANO, Texas (AP) - Authorities said it may take a few more days to determine exactly what killed
two girls who were found bleeding in a bed by their anguished father last week.
The deaths of 6-year-old Briana Diaz and Kameron Diaz, 3, were ruled homicides by the Collin County
medical examiner on Saturday. Their mother, 33-year-old Lisa Ann Diaz, has been charged with
capital murder.
"There's no obvious trauma to these children," Dr. William Rohr of the medical examiner's office said.
"I'm going to have to go through a process of ruling out other possibilities."
In a 911 tape released Friday, the father, Angel R. Diaz, told an emergency operator that he found the
girls lying on their backs on a bed with "lotion" coming out of their mouths and noses.
When he lifted the older girl's head, he said, there was bleeding from her mouth. Diaz, 42, told a
dispatcher that he feared his wife had drugged the children.
The mother remained in the Collin County Jail without bail Sunday following arraignment on two counts
of capital murder.
Lisa Ann Diaz was arrested Thursday night after her husband returned from work and found his
daughters. Before she was jailed, the mother was taken to Medical Center of Plano for treatment of
injuries that may have been self-inflicted.
Plano police said investigators were awaiting results of toxicology tests.
The suspect's sister, Michelle Acevedo, described her as a doting mother who quit taking college
courses to spend more time with her children.
"I don't understand what happened, but my sister was a great person," Acevedo said. "She's a loving
mother, and she loved her family."
