Gov. Perry canvasses constitutional amendment election votes

Monday, September 29, 2003

By the Associated Press

AUSTIN (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry on Monday certified the results of the Sept. 13 constitutional amendment election.

The governor is responsible for canvassing votes tabulated from any statewide election, outside races for governor and lieutenant governor.

Among the 22 amendments on the ballot was Proposition 12, the tort reform amendment that caps non-economic damages in civil cases.

"We passed into law the most sweeping tort reform measure in the nation," Perry said. "These comprehensive reforms restore balance to our system of justice while maintaining proper protections for Texans who are harmed."
