Man gets life sentence in slaying

Saturday, September 27, 2003

By the Associated Press

DALLAS (AP) - A second person has been sentenced to life in prison for the slaying of a Dallas man whose pet bird played a role in solving the case.

Johnny Serna, 24, was sentenced Wednesday for his role in the Christmas Eve 2001 stabbing death of Kevin Butler to settle a long-running dispute.

Prosecutors offered Serna's written confession.

On Feb. 18, Serna's half brother, Daniel Torres, was also convicted of capital murder.

Prosecutors have said the cockatoo's beak hit Torres' head as it flew at him in an attempt to protect Butler in his home.

The bird bloodied Torres' head, Torres wiped the blood and then touched a light switch -- leaving his DNA at the crime scene.

Torres had admitted stabbing the bird with a fork.

The pet died.
