Man jailed in Wichita Falls for allegedly smuggling illegal immigrants

By the Associated Press

Wednesday, January 29, 2003

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (AP) - A Mexican national is jailed on a charge of smuggling 16 illegal immigrants into the United States after the men paid him between $1,000 and $1,400.

Jose Monterrosa Juarez was arrested Saturday on U.S. 287 in Hardeman County. A Department of Public Safety trooper pulled him over for not wearing a seat belt and found 16 men crouching in his Chevy Suburban.

Juarez appeared Tuesday before a federal magistrate, and another hearing will be held Friday to determine whether he will remain in custody or be released.

Three of the men allegedly in the vehicle are being held as material witnesses.

The men crossed the U.S.-Mexico border between Jan. 20-23 near Douglas, Ariz., where they stayed a few days before Juarez was to move them to other locations, according to federal documents.
