Matagorda County Firestone case arrives in Houston

By the Associated Press

Thursday, January 30, 2003

HOUSTON (AP) - A $72 million lawsuit filed in Matagorda County in 1999 by three college students against Bridgestone-Firestone has been moved to Houston.

The lawsuit, stacked in five boxes, was transferred to Harris County late last month upon orders from State District Judge Craig Estlinbaum in Bay City.

An attorney for a Ford Explorer owner had asked to move the case because of publicity about an April 2002 mistrial declared when a Firestone attorney introduced evidence about marijuana use by the vehicle's occupants.

Estlinbaum halted a second trial in October when attorneys for the plaintiffs asked for a change of venue because of heavy news coverage and nearly all potential jurors indicated bias on jury questionnaires.
