Mother of rock star dead at 87

Monday, September 29, 2003

LINDEN, Texas (AP) - Hughlene McWhorter Henley, rock star Don Henley's mother, has died in an East Texas hospital where she was being treated for breast cancer.

Henley, 87, died on Friday in a Longview hospital after a 25-year battle with cancer. Private graveside services were held on Sunday at Linden Cemetery.

As a music lover and a piano player, she passed her talents on to her son, longtime family friend Richard Bowden told The Dallas Morning News.

"She was always supportive of our music endeavors when we were growing up and in high school," said Bowden, who played with the rock star the first eight years of his career and recently on the Eagles' tour of Europe and North America. While parents "often scoffed at the idea of a kid pursuing a career in music," he said, she did not.

The elder Henley was a lifelong resident of Linden, about 200 miles east of Dallas, where she raised the future founding member of the Eagles.

Henley's husband, C.J. Henley, died on July 7, 1972. Besides her son, she is survived by a grandson, Will Henley, and granddaughters, Annabel and Sophie, all of Dallas.
