Today's Obituaries (March 30, 1998)

Donald William Hewitt

Donald William Hewitt, 62, died Saturday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church with Mark Hewitt and Dr. Jeff Reid officiating. Burial will be in Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy. 277 South.

Mr. Hewitt was born in O'Brien and moved to Abilene from Alvarado two weeks ago. He was a Baptist and a retired driver for Yellow Freight. He married Carolyn Woody in 1960 in Odessa.

Survivors include his wife of Abilene; his mother, Sarah Hogue of Odessa; one son, Mark Hewitt of Abilene; two daughters, Teresa Newman of Coppell and Pam Bayles of Alvarado; one brother, Billy Hewitt of Odessa; four sisters, Maxine Ingram, Elva Jo Murphey, Linda Evans and Betty Tucker, all of Odessa; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Emma (Bobbie) McMillan

Emma (Bobbie) McMillan, 58, died Saturday at a local hospital.

Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel, 5701 Hwy. 277 South. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories with the Rev. Fred Nawarskas officiating.

Mrs. McMillan was born in El Paso and moved to Abilene from Michigan in 1968. She was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic church and Abilene Womens Bowling Association. She married Edgar McMillan in 1957 in Las Cruces, N.M.

Survivors include her husband of Abilene; one son, Eddie McMillan of Abilene; two daughters, Pat Gingrich of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jeannie Leetsch of Abilene; two brothers, Robert Ramirez and Joe Ramirez, both of El Paso; two sisters, Maria Correa of Detroit, Mich., and Gloria Ramirez of El Paso; and nine grandchildren.

Wilma Ruth Littlefield Propst

ANSON - Wilma Ruth Littlefield Propst, 79, died Saturday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home with the Rev. Loren Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Propst was born in Sagerton and moved to Anson as a child where she attended school. She moved to Abilene in 1989 and was a homemaker and a Methodist. She married Roy Propst in 1937; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Timothy Propst of Abilene; one sister, Maurine Blackley of Morton; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Sammie Faye Green

FORT WORTH - Sammie Faye Green, 73, died Saturday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Robertson Mueller Harper Funeral Directors with the Rev. Bud Beverley and Teresa Luby officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene with the Rev. Randy Grosenbach officiating.

Mrs. Green was born in Albany and was retired from Cook's Department Store. She was a member of Southside Church of Christ in Abilene. She married J.W. "Casey" Green in 1940; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann Gracy, Peggy Lou Green and Wanda Sue Green, all of Fort Worth; two sisters, Aileen Lambert of Gainesville and Dorothy Moran of Fort Worth; six grandchildren, five great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

The body will be in state at the funeral home after 9 a.m. today. The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Martha 'Jo' Reiger

BROWNWOOD - Martha "Jo" Reiger, 70, of Zephyr died Saturday at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Ron Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Zephyr Cemetery.

Mrs. Reiger was born in May and graduated from May High School. She was an aide for Zephyr schools for several years. She was a homemaker and a member or Jehovah's Witnesses. She married Gordon Reiger Jr. in 1946 in May.

Survivors include her husband of Zephyr; three sons, Steven Reiger and Johnny Reiger, both of Zephyr, and David Reiger of Lake Brownwood; two daughters, Sharon Powers of Salado and Janette Cornelius of Zephyr; four brothers, Aubrey Stewart of Brownwood, Logan Stewart and Garth Stewart, both of May, and Delton Stewart of San Antonio; two sisters, Hilva Angel of Coleman and Lillian Jackson of Cross Plains; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Stephen Cary Laws

COLORADO CITY - Stephen Cary Laws, 36, of Abilene died Saturday at an Abilene hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Colorado City Cemetery with Claudine Chaney officiating, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

Mr. Laws was born in Seminole and lived at Abilene State School most of his life.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Pam and C.W. Jarnigan of Colorado City; his father and stepmother, Mat and Betty Laws of Crane; one sister, Penny Laws of Midland; one brother, Joe Laws of Midland; a grandmother, Gladys Pedigo of Colorado City; four nieces and one nephew.

Lena Wilhelmina Schaake

STAMFORD - Lena Wilhelmina Schaake, 92, of Sagerton died Saturday at a local nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Sagerton with the Rev. Jeff Zell officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery, directed by Kinney Funeral Home.

Mrs. Schaake was born in Wellston, Okla., and moved to the Sagerton area in 1923. She farmed with her husband in the Sagerton area until retiring in 1964. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where she served in the Alter Guild. She married Otto Schaake in 1925 in Sagerton; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

Murle Straach

COLEMAN - Murle Straach, 65, died Sunday at his home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Coleman City Cemetery with the Rev. Reed Justus officiating, directed by Walker Funeral Home.

Mr. Straach was born in San Angelo and graduated from Coleman High School. He lived in Mills from 1932-1946 when he moved to Coleman. He was a welding contractor and a member of First United Methodist Church. He married Bobbie Kidd in 1951 in Silver Valley.

Survivors include his wife of Coleman; his mother, Alma Duggins of San Angelo; two daughters, Melisa Mills of Coleman and Cindy Owens of Iraan; one son, Eric Straach of Coleman; one sister, Judy Poarch of Martinez, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Association; or to Hospice of the Big Country, 3113 Oldham Lane, Abilene 79601.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-7 p.m. today.

Evelyn Marie Brigham

STAMFORD - Evelyn Marie Brigham, 77, died Saturday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 4:30 p.m. today at Orient Street Church of Christ with Chad Massey officiating. Burial will be in Tuxedo Cemetery, directed by Tankersley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brigham was born in Stamford and lived in the area all her life. She graduated from Stamford High School in 1938 and was postmaster in Tuxedo when it closed in the mid-'40s. She was a substitute teacher at Tuxedo and a member of Orient Street Church of Christ. She married Oran Brigham in 1939 in Stamford.

Survivors include her husband of Stamford; two sons, Oran Brigham Jr. of Austin and Randy Brigham of Tuxedo; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Leona Jennings

AVOCA - Leona Jennings, 90, of Baird and formerly of Avoca, died Saturday at a Baird nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Avoca Baptist Church with the Revs. Burtis Williams and Terry Davis officiating. Burial will be in Springcreek Cemetery, directed by Tankersley Funeral Home of Stamford.

Mrs. Jennings was born in Burnet County and moved to New Mexico as a child. She moved back to Burnet County and in 1928 moved to Jones County. She moved to Stamford in 1982 and to Abilene in 1984. She was a Baptist. She married Bert Jennings in 1925 in Bertram; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Gerald Jennings of Baird; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Al Walraven Jr.

THROCKMORTON - Albert Tavel "Al" Walraven Jr., 75, died Friday at a Dallas hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Cliff Lester and Dr. LeRoy Summers officiating. Burial will be in Proffitt Cemetery in Young County, directed by Merriman-Archer Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas with Dr. LeRoy Summers officiating.

Mr. Walraven was born in Dallas, where he graduated from high school. He attended Southern Methodist University and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity for 58 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was president of Walraven Brothers from 1948 until retiring in 1988. He was president of the Graphic Arts Association (now Printing Industries Association of Texas). He was a member of the Legion of Valor, where he was vice commander of the Texas Chapter, and at the time of his death, he was second vice commander of the national chapter. He had been elected commander of the Legion of Valor for 2000-2001. He was a member of Park Cities Baptist Church and was associated with Prestonwood Baptist Church in Dallas and First Baptist Church in Throckmorton. He was a 50-year Mason, a Shriner and a member of UTD Philatelic Library advisory board and the Chancellor Council of the University of Texas. He had been commander of American Legion Post 581 in Dallas

Survivors include his wife, Mary Franc Perry (Susie) Walraven of Throckmorton; one son, Albert Tavel Walraven III of Dallas; one daughter, Anne Elizabeth Rupe of Austin; two stepdaughters, Debbie Lukert of Wichita Falls and Tonya Elliston of Woodson; and six grandchildren.

Daphne 'Dee' Tindall Woods

EASTLAND - Daphne "Dee" Tindall Woods, 77, died Saturday.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kyle Glenn officiating, assisted by the Rev. Vaughn Baker. Burial will be in Eastland City Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.

Mrs. Woods was born in San Antonio and attended school in Alba. She attended beauty school in Dallas and was a licensed beautician for 35 years, working many years in Eastland. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was active in the library and Tindall Museum. She was the widow of Pete Tindall and Alvin Woods.

Survivors include one son, Dean Tindall of Talty; one daughter, Dorothy Horn of Haltom City; one brother, Bruce Holland of Fayetteville, Ark.; one sister, Geneva Cause of Grand Saline; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Alice Lorraine Isham

COMANCHE - Alice Lorraine Isham, 72, died Saturday at a local hospital. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Comanche Funeral Home.

Rosa Lee Williams

GOLDTHWAITE - Rosa Lee Williams, 88, of Mullin died Friday in Lamesa. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel.

Voyd Lee Doggett

GOLDTHWAITE - Voyd Lee Doggett died Sunday at a local nursing home. Services are pending with Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home.

James Mac Parks

STEPHENVILLE - James Mac Parks, 62, died Saturday at a Dallas hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Graham Street Church of Christ, directed by Stephenville Funeral Home.

Tolly Belle Smith

STEPHENVILLE - Tolly Belle Smith, 92, died Sunday at a local hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Chico.

Ellwin Charles Westphal

DUBLIN - Ellwin Charles Westphal, 84, died Thursday in Stephenville. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Stephenville, directed by Harrell Funeral Home.

Troy Deen

MERKEL - Troy G. Deen, 83, died Sunday at a local nursing home. Services are pending with Starbuck Funeral Home.

Paula Skipworth

Paula Skipworth, 75, of Clyde died Sunday at her home. Services are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy. 277 South.

Helen Weaver

BIG SPRING - Helen Weaver, 79, died Sunday at a local nursing home after a lengthy illness. Services are pending with Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Mildred Clegg

ROTAN - Mildred Clegg, 73, of Denton died Saturday in Denton. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Weathersbee Funeral Home Chapel.
