Brownwood 42, Granbury 16

GRANBURY - Brownwood put its week off to good use, overpowering previously unbeaten Granbury on the road 42-16 here Friday night.

Both teams now are 3-1 after the District 6-4A opener.

The No. 9 ranked Lions got three touchdowns from Deacon Burns while Colby Freeman accounted for three scores.

The Lions and Pirates were locked in a tight battle until Brownwood scored twice in the final 2:02 of the first half to take a 28-13 halftime lead.

Down 10-7 after scoring first, Brownwood went ahead for good on Jason George's short TD run and the second of Jeremy Findley's six PATs.

George led all ballcarriers with 165 rushing yards on just 13 carries

Granbury closed to 14-13 on Mark Hayworth's second long field goal. But Brownwood countered with a 46-yard run by Colby Freeman and then his 52-yard bomb to Burns with just 24 seconds left in the half, a play that may have turned around the game.

The only scoring Granbury could muster in the second half was a field goal by placekicker Jeff Simpson.

Freeman added a 3-yard TD toss to Chance Pearce while Burns scored his third TD with 7:40 to play.

Granbury's only touchdown came before its offense hit the field as Brandon Bleeker ran back the kickoff 97 yards following Brownwood's first touchdown.

Freeman completed 6 of 8 passes for 113 yards for the Lions while his counterpart, Justin Goolsby, completed 12 of 23 tosses for 110 yards.

Brownwood had 476 total yards to 135 for Granbury.
