San Angelo Lake View 27, Wylie 6

Both teams made their share of mistakes, but it was speed that made the biggest difference as Wylie dropped a 27-6 decision to San Angelo Lake View Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
It was an early season opener for both teams, and it showed.
The teams combined for 230 yards in penalties, but the Class 4A Chiefs responded to Wylie's first-quarter touchdown with four of their own.
Lake View quarterback Alonzo Robinson, who passed for more than 2,000 yards last season, notched 227 yards against the Bulldogs, with three touchdown strikes. He completed 11 of 21 with one interception, including seven to Issac Flores for 185 yards.
Speed not only helped the Chiefs break open several plays, but it also helped on defense. Wylie was limited to 36 yards rushing on 29 carries. Quarterback Scott Bull threw for 93 yards, but was intercepted twice in the second half.
In the second half, Wylie's offense got only as far as the Lake View 35-yard line once.
"I (had said) I was scared of their speed," said Wylie head coach Hugh Sandifer, whose team will be playing host next Friday night to Breckenridge, the third-ranked Class 3A team in the state. "Their speed hurt us plenty of times. They turned little gains into touchdowns.
"We didn't do a good job of handling adversity. We're disappointed we lost the game, but believe me, we will improve."
But the Chiefs made it tougher on themselves than it had to be, as they were called for 13 penalties for 134 yards.
"That's something we've got to get better at," said first-year Lake View head coach Billy Klemstein. "Those type things are things you can correct.
"We've got some good team speed. We just overcame some mistakes. We fought and we played hard."
Robinson wasn't able to complete a pass until the second quarter, but when he did it was the first of several big plays for the speedy Chiefs.
His pass to Alfred Walton was turned into a 53-yard gain that put the ball at the Wylie 15-yard line. That set up the Chiefs first score, which put them in the lead.
Wylie appeared to have scored on its second possession of the game when Dustin Williams caught a screen pass from Scott Bull and turned it into a 57- yard play. But the Bulldogs were called for holding, wiping out the play, and had to punt four snaps later.
But Wylie came through with a touchdown that stuck late in the first quarter. A 2-yard run by Danny Herrera with 19 seconds to go in the first quarter capped a 10-play drive that covered just 34 yards.
That series began after Herrera picked off a pass at the Lake View 38.
On the extra point try, the snap wasn't handled by holder Eric Holt, and kicker John Self picked up the ball and was tackled, leaving the score 6-0, Wylie.
The Chiefs came back on their next possession to take the lead on a 6-yard touchdown run by Alfred Walton. Wade Day's extra point kick gave the Chiefs their 7-6 lead with 9:07 remaining in the second quarter.
Wylie's Mark McKelvey recovered a Lake View fumble at the Chiefs' 43-yard line with 5:58 to go in the half, but the Bulldogs also lost the ball on a fumble just two plays later.
More penalty problems (holding) wiped out a fine 48-yard run by Lake View's Rashad Chance late in the half, which would have put the Chiefs at the Wylie 5-yard line with time for one more play before intermission.
Flores contributed both of his touchdowns in the third quarter for the Chiefs. His 41-yard reception from Robinson with 10:09 left in the quarter capped a three-play drive after the Chiefs started from their own 44-yard line after taking the second-half kickoff.
Later, after forcing a Wylie punt, the Chiefs reeled off an 83-yard drive that included just six plays. Robinson connected with Flores, who broke a tackle at the Wylie 35 and sprinted in the rest of the way for a 57-yard air strike as the Chiefs took a 21-6 lead with 1:19 left in the third stanza.
The Chiefs set up their final touchdown on a 21-yard punt return that gave them the ball at Wylie's 19-yard line. Just four plays later, Robinson rolled out left and threw back across the middle to hit Aaron Linthicum in the back of the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown pass.
Day kicked the extra point, but the Chiefs were called for illegal procedure. When the tried again, the kick sailed wide left, leaving the score 27-6.
Colby Sykes made a diving interception of a Bull pass to give the Chiefs the ball at the Wylie 41 with 4:57 left in the game, but ended up punting after five plays put them only at the Wylie 30.
