April 21 -- Eagle catcher lets his actions on the field speak for him: Abilene High catcher Chris Churchill doesn't pump his fist or look into the opposing dugout after he catches a strikeout. April 14 -- Eagles win berth in regional golf tournament: An emotional Bill Tittle had so difficult a time holding back the tears Monday that he could barely present San Angelo Central with the District 4-5A boys golf championship trophy. That was because he had just given his team, the Abilene High Eagles, the runner-up award after the head coach saw his team record an incredible final round score of 291 at Abilene Country Club.

April 14 -- Blanket senior may have set Class A record (Bill Hart): For a guy who works on the high jump only two days a week, Justin Simpson does all right. The senior at Blanket, who was second at the Class A state meet last year, cleared 7-0 at Cross Plains last Thursday in what may be a record-setting performance.

April 14 -- Breckenridge senior has chance to be state champ again: BRECKENRIDGE - Sarah Everett has known the thrill of being a state champion, and she has one more opportunity to regain that feeling.

April 12 -- ACU women split Saturday doubleheader with TWU: DENTON -- Abilene Christian University scored four runs in the the eighth inning to defeat Texas Woman's University 7-4 and gain a split of the teams' doubleheader before a record-crowd of 347 at Pioneer Field.

April 12 -- Eagles squeak by Cougars, 12-11: It was deja vu for Abilene High and Cooper Saturday as the Eagles escaped with a 12-11 District 4-5A victory at Blackburn Field.

April 11 -- ACU women split doubleheader with Texas Woman's: DENTON -- Abilene Christian University softball pitcher Shelly Owen-Martinez gave up just three runs in 15 and one third innings of a doubleheader against Texas Woman's University. Still, the righthander managed just a split, as the Pioneers scored the only run of the second game in the ninth inning after ACU took the first game, 5-2.

Florida State's starting quarterback Dan Kendra suffered a knee injury in the Seminoles' season-ending spring scrimmage. Kendra will have surgery Thursday and could possibly be lost for the entire season next fall.

April 7 -- Bowden: "America has changed, but God doesn't change": Bobby Bowden said family "meant everything" when he was growing up. But America has changed in the last 50 years, and Bowden said today that 50 percent of the players on his Florida State football team come from families with no father, no mother or neither.

April 6 -- Martin wins Texas 500: FORT WORTH - Nothing may run like a Deere, and a Little may go a long way. In either case, though, it wasn't quite enough to overtake Mark Martin Saturday in the Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

April 6 -- Don't blame this wreck on the track (Ted Dunnam): FORT WORTH - Welcome to Texas Motor Spillway. No, there was no water seeping on to the track Sunday. That problem's been temporarily solved with a band aid.

April 6 -- A few thoughts about the NBA (Candy Reagan): The NBA hasn't even reached the playoffs yet,and already the debate rages over Michael Jordan's impending retirement. He says he will retire -- something he's already done once. But his fans, of course, want him to stay. I think he should retire.

April 6 -- U.S. juniors' top ranks are slim now (Rick Meyers): Have you wondered who is going to take the place of Pete Sampras, Michael Chang and Andre Agassi for the United States when they retire? That answer is supposed to be "our current best juniors will be there in a few years." Those juniors include Clyde's Brandon Hawk and his fellow top 10 in the nation competitors.

April 5 -- Howard Payne sweeps Hardin-Simmons: The second trip through Abilene proved to be a lot better for the Howard Payne baseball team. After dropping two of three to McMurry last weekend, the Yellow Jackets completed a three-game sweep of Hardin-Simmons Saturday, taking both games of the doubleheader, 12-1 and 18-7 at Hunter Field.

April 5 -- AHS girls lose game, star player: The Abilene High Lady Eagles lost more than a game and their lead atop the District 4-5A girls softball standings Saturday. They also lost their star player.

April 5 -- Texans, Wildcats split pair again: STEPHENVILLE -- For the second day in a row, the Abilene Christian University baseball team split a doubleheader with Tarleton State University.

April 5 -- Owen-Martinez scatters five hits as ACU splits pair: Shelly Owen-Martinez scattered five hits in the first game of a doubleheader as Abilene Christian University beat Eastern New Mexico, 2-1, Saturday in women's Lone Star Conference softball action.
