July 31 -- Prairie Dogs win despite slow start: The Lafayette Bayou Bullfrogs stranded 11 runners in the first six innings and the Abilene Prairie Dogs failed to score a run in the first five innings despite leading off four of the five innings with a base hit.

July 29 -- Popular McNeely currently battling cancer (Al Pickett): Abilene native Larry McNeely, the long-time golf pro at San Saba Municipal Golf Course, is currently in isolation at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston after undergoing a bone marrow transplant in his battle with cancer.

July 28 -- Eagles' Brooks confident going into all-star game (Bill Hart): HOUSTON - The North will score at least one touchdown tonight in the Southwestern Bell Texas High School Coaches Association all-star football game. Ahmad Brooks has guaranteed it.

July 28 -- North team wins thriller at the buzzer: HOUSTON - It's becoming old hat for Greg Harrington to make last-second field goals to win all-star basketball games this summer. His 3-point basket just beat the final buzzer Monday night to give the North a spectacular 106-105 victory over the South in the Southwestern Bell Texas High School Coaches Association game at Hofheinz Pavilion.

July 28 -- Abilene Junior easily defeats Pecos, 13-2: The Abilene Junior all-star baseball team won its 13-year-old-sectional title game Monday night by defeating Pecos, 13-2, at Red Bud Park in a game shortened to five innings by the ten-run rule.

July 28 -- Bruce Lietzke watching son play in Abilene (Ted Dunnam): If, for any reason, one would ever need to hide from Bruce Lietzke, the best place to remain unobserved would be the closet in which Lietzke keeps his golf clubs.

July 26 -- 4-H Horse Show wraps up with deserving champions: Quincy Cahill of Madison County took three individual class championships in Saturday's wrapup of the 36th annual Texas State 4-H Horse Show at the Taylor County Expo Center but ended up reserve champion behind Kelly Boudreaux of Randall County, who was named Grand Champion of the judged horseman class.

July 26 -- Web helping AQHA grow memberships (Lynda Rae): Since April, more than 150 new or renewed American Quarter Horse Association memberships have been done by the speed and technology offered by the worldwide web.

July 26 -- Bowling in all 50 states can be done by one man (Mae Fraser): Arizona bowler George Alces made a cross-country trip in 1990 to New Jersey to attend his nephew's wedding. He decided to take his bowling ball and shoes along and bowl in each state along the way.

July 26 -- Abilene Senior has no trouble winning championship: This time, Abilene Senior made it look easy. In the championship game of the Senior League sub-sectional baseball tournament at McMurry's Walt Driggers Field Saturday night, Abilene Senior thumped Allen decisively, 13-1. The game ended on the 10-run rule after Allen batted in the top of the fifth inning.

July 26 -- Abilene Junior beats Fort Worth team to take title: PLANO - Abilene Junior romped to an 18-6 victory over Fort Worth West Side Saturday night, capturing the Junior League sub-sectional tournament title.

July 26 -- Sweetwater still alive in baseball tourney: DENISON - Sweetwater extended its season at the 9-and-10-year-old sub-sectional baseball tournament with a 3-2 victory over Plano Saturday afternoon.

July 24 -- 'Northern' players finding it hard to adjust to heat for All-Americas Bowl: BRECKENRIDGE - After the first workout earlier this week, a player obviously from the North team was overheard to say, "We're going to be here for five days in this heat? That's like five days in Hell."

July 24 -- Aviators have a logo now to go with their team: The Abilene Aviators are not just a name anymore. Fans can now put a face - literally - with the name after the team unveiled its logo Thursday at a press conference luncheon.

July 12 -- You can customize your own bowling ball (Mae Fraser): How many times have you bought a new bowling ball, and, after having it drilled, find the thumb hole does not fit or the finger holes are too small?

July 11 -- A few notes and quotes while looking back over the past week in sports (Al Pickett): Besides selecting a new commissioner this week, major league baseball owners also approved the 1999 schedule. It includes a switch by American League teams to an unbalanced schedule for the first time since 1976.

July 10 -- T-LL owner's son visited Abilene, Prairie Dogs (Mark Wilson): Chris Chen was in town Wednesday just catching up on how things are going with the Abilene Prairie Dogs. That's part of the family job he performs as a son of Horn Chen, who became the new principal owner of the Texas-Louisiana League earlier this year.

July 10 -- Chapman signs tennis leter of intent with ACU: Abilene High's Cody Chapman, who reached the Class 5A state doubles final this spring with Mitch Aston, has signed a letter of intent to play tennis at Abilene Christian University.

July 9 -- Former Cooper tennis star talks about Aggie life at the net: Just minutes after her semifinal loss Wednesday afternoon at Rose Park to Rebekah Forney of New Braunfels, Kathryn Scott was getting her ankles iced.

July 9 -- Despite weather, hazards, racing fans filling grandstands (Ted Dunnam): Water was Texas Motor Speedway's nemesis earlier this year. Fire was Daytona International Speedway's problem last week. What type of weather will NASCAR Winston Cup racing get wind of next?

July 9 -- Prairie Dogs beat Amarillo, 3-2: Brent Bubela gave himself a nice birthday gift Wednesday night, and gave the Abilene Prairie Dogs a victory. Bubela delivered a double down the right-field line that drove in Abilene newcomer Sergio Cairo with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Prairie Dogs posted a 3-2 triumph over Amarillo.

July 9 -- Dogs make trade for good defensive player (Mark Wilson): Abilene manager Barry Jones recently made a trade for Sergio Cairo, hoping that he will provide the Prairie Dogs with some outfield help. If Cairo can repeat what he did in 1994 with the Texas Rangers' Double-A club in Tulsa, Okla., Jones should be pleased.

July 9 -- Signing of goalie Martino was key for Abilene Aviators: The new Abilene Aviators picked up their most important piece of the puzzle in putting together a new hockey team when they announced the signing of goalie Tony Martino recently.

July 8 -- Spud Webb tells local youngsters how to be successful: No one looked up to Spud Webb. They didn't have to. At 5-7, Webb isn't any taller than many of the campers he spoke to Tuesday at the Athletes Against Drugs basketball camp at Hardin-Simmons University's Mabee Complex. But the 12-year NBA veteran was a giant in the youngsters' eyes as he encouraged them to work hard, stay in school and remain alcohol- and drug-free.

July 8 -- Hamblin's divine intervention ... Part II (Al Pickett): Several years ago, I wrote a column about David Hamblin's use of divine intervention on the golf course. I was playing in a charity tournament at the time with the pastor at St. Paul United Methodist Church when he sank a putt from at least 50 feet. I claimed only divine intervention could have made that putt go in the hole.

July 8 -- Defense costs Prairie Dogs game against Amarillo: Ragged defense helped send the Abilene Prairie Dogs down to defeat Tuesday, as Amarillo took a second straight win, 8-3.

July 8 -- Dogs' Mason has his eye(s) on the ball better now (Mark Wilson): Lamont Mason can see clearly now. The first-year Prairie Dog infielder was struggling at the plate after he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 32nd round in 1995 after his senior year at Lubbock Christian University.

July 7 -- Dillas rock Prairie Dogs, 15-4: The Amarillo Dillas are the second-best hitting team in the Texas-Louisiana League, but that fact didn't make Monday night's game any easier for Abilene player/manager Barry Jones to take. Amarillo, which came into the game averaging 11.3 runs per outing, with a .329 team batting average, unloaded 20 hits off of five Prairie Dog pitchers in a 15-4 blowout at Scott Field.

July 7 -- Miller brothers take home saddles, big checks: McCade Miller knows one thing for sure; next year his roping classification number will definitely change. The 19-year-old recent high school graduate teamed with his brother, 16-year-old Miles, as both won Coors Trophy Saddles and checks for $3,478 as champions in the 1.5 roping of the 12th annual Original Team Roping Finals.

July 6 -- Why don't the fans lock someone out for a change? (Candy Reagan): I'm tired of strikes, lockouts, labor agreements, labor disagreements, players' associations, wealthy athletes who don't want to play and wealthy owners who don't want to pay. It's time we, the fans, had a strike of our own. Let's lock out. After all, we have demands, too.

July 6 -- Prairie Dogs trounce Crickets for fourth-straight win: LUBBOCK - The Abilene Prairie Dogs won their fourth straight game Sunday night, whipping the Lubbock Crickets, 6-1, in a Texas-Louisiana League baseball game at Dan Law Field.

July 6 -- Junior Tennis Council extends rule to all juniors (Rick Meyers): Anyone playing junior tennis in Texas will be interested in the following information. A few weeks ago I told you what was to be the call item brought to the Executive Committee of the USTA Texas Section concerning the USTA's new birthday rule.

July 6 -- Youngster, 10, wins trophy saddle in Dummy Roping competition: Young Jay Manning of Ingram outlasted others in the 11-and-under class to win the trophy saddle with a throw of 181/2 feet in the Dummy Roping Sunday afternoon. He just recently turned 10.

July 6 -- Abilene Speedway: Results of Saturday night's action.

July 5 -- Prairie Dogs defeat Crickets again: Walk plus double equals offense. That was the simple formula Abilene used to knock off Lubbock for their third win in a row, 2-1, in front of 3,449 fans on a Fourth of July night Saturday at Scott Field. Notes

The top-seeded Hicks, who is in his third year as the bat boy for the Abilene Prairie Dogs, won the boys 14 singles title for the second year in a row at Rose Park Tennis Center in the Abilene Highway 80 tennis tournament.

July 5 -- Best Remuda Award nominations open (Lynda Rae): The American Quarter Horse Association, searching for the best ranch horses in the United States, has opened nominations for the 1998 AQHA/National Cattlemen's Beef Association Best Remuda Award.

July 4 -- "The Hoss" in shock about getting into the Hall of Fame (Bill Hart): Many years ago, a college football coach remarked that track and field sprinters didn't make good running backs because they were accustomed to running in a straight line. Stick a football under their arm and they became a different-type runner. Perhaps he was referring to their mental toughness.

July 4 -- AHS junior peaking as Highway 80 tournament begins: Wes Longacre is learning to build points the old fashioned way - with patience, one stroke at a time. Longacre, the top seed in boys 16 singles in the three-day Abilene Highway 80 tennis tournament that began Friday at Rose Park Tennis Center, is coming off his best tournament performance ever.

July 4 -- Prairie Dogs hang on for 11-10 win: Fireworks, July 4th weekend, Lubbock vs. Abilene...must mean a Prairie Dogs comeback. For the second straight year, the Dogs spotted the Crickets a huge advantage before coming from behind for a victory. Notes

July 4 -- Long road to roping finals begins all over the country: The roping road to the finals of the Original Team Roping Association in Abilene this week starts in Florida or Kansas or New Mexico or any of hundreds of locations in between.

July 4 -- Youth league baseball tourney begins: All-star postseason youth league baseball action gets under way today with action in two tournament brackets.

July 3 -- Dilworth has his eyes set on long jump record: The world may be surprised if Kevin Dilworth breaks the world record in the long jump - but he won't. Dilworth, 24, a former track standout at Abilene Christian University, plans to break the world mark of 29 feet, 43/4 inches at some point in the next two years.

July 3 -- Heat may be keeping Highway 80 tournament numbers low: Having officially reached at least 100 degrees 10 times this summer in Abilene may have something to do with the fact that entries in the Abilene Highway 80 tennis tournament are down significantly.

July 3 -- Prairie Dogs split twinbill: GREENVILLE, Miss. - George Preston pitched three scoreless innings of relief to give the Abilene Prairie a 6-4 victory and a split of a Texas-Louisiana League doubleheader Thursday at Legion Field.

July 3 -- Fireworks tickets still available: General admission seats for the July 4 game between the Lubbock Crickets and Abilene Prairie Dogs are still available, team officials announced Thursday.

July 3 -- Granbury ropers thrill to 8-plus second run: Two ropers from Granbury marked an 8-plus second run for the top spot in the 3.5 roping at the Original Team Roping Finals Thursday night.

July 2 -- Walt Garrison has never stopped being a Cowboy (Bill Hart): Walt Garrison has been one form of a cowboy most of his life. He participated in rodeos in high school at Lewisville and he played football for the Oklahoma State University Cowboys and the Dallas Cowboys.

July 2 -- New lights for Abilene Speedway (Ted Dunnam): Abilene Speedway has recently installed a new lighting system which should make it more viewing friendly for spectators.

July 2 -- Andrae Patterson talks about NBA lockout: Andrae Patterson was back home Wednesday in Abilene after spending three days in his "new home" of Minneapolis. The 46th pick in last week's National Basketball Association draft worked out Sunday, Monday and Tuesday for Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Kevin McHale and head coach Flip Saunders.

July 2 -- Team roping competition enters 'two-day sweats': Wednesday started the two-day sweats in the eight-day team roping marathon going on at the Taylor County Expo Center. If a team roped Wednesday among the approximately 650 teams, it has to sweat it out to see if their times hold up for the short go-round scheduled to start about 6:30 this evening. Another 500 or so 3.5 teams will be up today.

July 2 -- Prairie Dogs rained out: GREENVILLE, Miss. - The Abilene Prairie Dogs Texas-Louisiana League baseball game scheduled to be played Wednesday night against the Greenville Bluesmen was postponed because of rain.

July 1 -- Estes had a noteworthy career, worthy of the Hall of Fame (Bill Hart): It is a shame that the late Dr. Bob Estes isn't around to accept his induction into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame next March in Waco.

July 1 -- Prairie Dogs lose to Greenville, 7-6, in 12 innings: GREENVILLE, Miss. - The Abilene Prairie Dogs wasted a strong outing by pitcher Sam Arminio and a grand slam from Keith Abrego Tuesday night in a 7-6 loss to Greenville in 12 innings.

July 1 -- Veteran team tops 4.5 Century at roping finals: Quanah banker Gerry Knox and Doug Schmidt of Guymon, Okla., get together about twice a year and have been doing so for six or seven years. Tuesday they earned $986 apiece for the top spot in the 4.5 Century, with added money for doing well in additional slots.
