June 30 -- Big Spring's Mitchell is as fast as everyone thought (Bill Hart): There are always critics of a good sprinter's times, and no one probably had his performances questioned as much as Tory Mitchell of Big Spring did last spring. Twice he was timed under 10 seconds for the 100 meters, which is rare for any high school runner. Sure, they were hand timed and run with the wind to his back. Those are the main reasons people wonder about a track time.

June 30 -- Team ropers participating by the hundreds: Two South Texas team ropers came and conquered in the average of the 5.5 division Monday of the 12th version of the Coors-sponsored Original Team Roping Association Finals at the Taylor County Expo Center.

June 30 -- Prairie Dogs beat Bluesmen, 4-2: Give Steve Ortiz a win and a save for his performance Monday night. The southpaw pitched seven innings in registering his fourth win of the season. But it was his defense that saved the game for the Prairie Dogs, who ended a two-game losing streak to Greenville, 4-2, in front of a sparse crowd of 769 at Scott Field.

June 30 -- First half of season has been memorable for Pierce (Jeff Walker): The first half of the Texas-Louisiana League season is one Byron Pierce will not soon forget. The Prairie Dogs general manager has watched the squad struggle to find consistency as the Dogs have resided at the bottom of the standings since week 1.

June 2 -- Hot pitching by Gregg leads Wylie Bulldogs to semifinal win: SNYDER - The heat was oppressive, and so was Grant Gregg's pitching. The Wylie senior lefthander hurled a three-hitter and tied a career high with 15 strikeouts as the Bulldogs downed Kermit 6-0 Monday night at Moffett Field intheir Region I-3A semifinal baseball playoff game.

June 2 -- Prairie Dogs lose despite two rallies: ALEXANDRIA, La. - The Abilene Prairie Dogs lost a heartbreaker Monday night at Bringhurst Field. Corey Gafford's two-out double off the left-field wall scored Robert Hughes from first base with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Alexandria Aces to a 6-5 win over the Prairie Dogs.

June 2 -- Cross Plains splits with Windthorst, sets up deciding game: MINERAL WELLS - Jarad Richards was tired, but he wasn't about to ask coach Cord Woerner to take him out of the game. Woerner admitted that he thought four or five times that he should call on a relief pitcher. But he stayed with his senior right-hander, who retired two batters with the tying run on third and the winning run on second to preserve a 5-4 eight-inning victory over Windthorst Monday night at Pratt Field.

June 2 -- Coahoma wins semifinal game against New Deal: BIG SPRING - The 100-degree heat Monday didn't seem to bother Coahoma pitcher T.J. Green. The Bulldogs starting pitcher got stronger as the game progressed in the blistering heat as he pitched Coahoma to an 11-4 victory over New Deal in the Region I-2A semifinal at Howard College's Jack Barber Field. Green now has an 8-0 record this season.

June 1 -- Beanballs are a lot more dangerous than fights: (Candy Reagan): I tried to refrain, but after almost two weeks of hearing and reading about the big fight between the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees, I just can't help myself.

June 1 -- Wylie Bulldogs play Kermit tonight in semis: SNYDER - Wylie coach Clay Martin believes his Bulldogs are peaking at the right time. If so, that may be bad news for the remaining competition in Region I-3A.

June 1 -- Prairie Dogs claim disputed win: Barry Takahashi epitomizes the term "utility player". Used as a pitcher in two games thus far, manger Barry Jones inserted Takahashi as the designated hitter Sunday night in the series finale with Rio Grande Valley. The lefthander responded with a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the sixth to lead the 'Dogs to a 5-3 comeback victory before a sparse crowd of at Crutcher Scott Field.

June 1 -- Prairie Dogs manager trying to get them out of mental slump: The Abilene Prairie Dogs manager Barry Jones used his seventh different lineup in eight games Sunday night. The second-year skipper is trying to generate offense for a team that is currently fourth in the Texas-Louisiana League in team batting average, but last in runs scored and hits.

June 1 -- Here's the latest(?) on the Texas juniors ruling (Rick Meyers): I gan give you the unofficial, tentative, possible plan the USTA Texas Section has in store for the Texas juniors in regard to the USTA's new birthday ruling (was that vague enough?).
