March 31 -- Grandparents in Abilene thrilled for Tennessee, granddaughter (Al Pickett): Needless to say, John and Delphia Scott of Abilene are still beaming with pride today. And rightfully so. Their granddaughter, Tamika Catchings, was the leading scorer Sunday night for Tennessee as the Lady Vols completed a 39-0 season and captured their third straight NCAA women's national basketball championship.

March 31 -- Cooper's Garcia found a way to be in two places at once: Kelly Garcia has found time to compete in soccer and track, even if both sports happen on the same day. It happened at the Concho Belle Relays in San Angelo, Cooper's second track meet of the season, but Kelly's first.

March 31 -- Wellhausen powers Cougar charge: ODESSA - Cooper shot a 326, the best round of the day, to pull within two shots of leader San Angelo Central after the second round of the District 4-5A golf tournament Monday at The Club at Mission Dorado.

March 31 -- HSU, McMurry golfers in 5th, 9th place: SEGUIN - Hardin-Simmons University is in a tie for fifth and McMurry University stands ninth after the first day of play at the Lady Bulldog Spring Classic golf tournament Monday.

March 30 -- Penders is a respected coach; mess probably not his doing (Candy Reagan): The saga of Luke Axtell is starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth.The freshman basketball player is in the middle of the controversy that has engulfed Coach Tom Penders and the University of Texas basketball program right at the climax of March Madness. And frankly, I have a difficult time believing Penders is guilty.

March 30 -- Wildcats take tennis win over WTAM: Abilene Christian Univeristy's men improved to 15-3 on the season with victories Saturday over Oklahoma City and West Texas A&M universities in the ACU Wildcat Classic.

March 30 -- Lady Cougars take share of team title: KERRVILLE - Cooper's Lacy Johnson and Andi Wildner won two three-set matches Saturday to win the girls doubles title at the Kerrville Tivy Big 12 championships and help the Cougars to a share of the team title.

March 29 -- Wylie girls Division I champs of All-American City Track Classic: The Wylie girls are back as Division I champions of the All-American City Track Classic and they did it the old-fashioned way Saturday at Elmer Gray stadium -- they earned it.

March 29 -- AHS cruises to 13-3 win over Odessa High: Abilene High pitcher Eric Peoples outpitched one of the top pitchers in District 4-5A and waited for the Eagle bats to come alive as AHS cruised to a 13-3 victory Saturday over Odessa High Saturday at Blackburn Field.

March 29 -- AHS squeaks out softball win over cross-town rival, 9-8: A funny thing happened on the way to a seemingly easy Abilene High girls softball victory: Cooper almost won the game.

March 29 -- Wylie pair wins girls doubles title: BROWNWOOD -- Lindsey English and Stephanie Haynes of Wylie won the B girls doubles title Saturday at the Bluebonnet Invitational tennis tournament.

March 28 -- ACU track teams open outdoor season: Abilene Christian University, fresh from winning the NCAA Division II men's and women's indoor national championships, opens its outdoor season today.

March 28 -- Big Spring senior unleashes best shot put effort: Nadia Cole has been used to pain for so long it doesn't bother her much anymore. Friday, she inflicted some pain of her own on other shot putters at the All-America City Track Classic.

March 28 -- All-Big Country 4A-5A basketball teams revealed: Catherine Weir and Derrick Franklin followed up their terrific junior seasons on the basketball court by getting even better.

March 28 -- Hardin-Simmons destroys Austin college, 19-1: SHERMAN -- Hardin-Simmons University collected a season-high 23 hits in a 19-1 romp Friday over Austin College. It was the Cowboys' 27th consecutive baseball victory over Austin College.

March 28 -- McMurry bats active in 16-6 win over Howard Payne: The McMurry University baseball team came out swatting like crazy Friday night -- and the mosquitoes weren't even out.

March 28 -- Wylie downs Eastland, 9-4: The Wylie baseball team had Eastland seeing double, or doubles.

March 28 -- Softball: Eastland 5, Wylie 2: Eastland scored three times in the second inning and went on to claim a 5-2 win over Wylie in a District 6-3A softball game Friday at the Wylie field.

March 28 -- Mankato State trips ACU, 7-6: Mankato State scored five runs in the sixth inning and held off Abilene Christian University for a 7-6 win in a college baseball game Friday at Scott Field.

March 27 -- Eagle quarterback makes history in All-Star nod: Abilene High quarterback Ahmad Brook has made history again.

March 27 -- Former Cooper coach going to Final Four courtesy of Bob Estes (Ted Dunnam): Beating astronomical odds, R.M. Currin, a No. 17 seed, has advanced to the Final Four this weekend in San Antonio. At no time did Currin believe he was even remotely a Final Four contender, but a full dose of March Madness is soon headed his way.

March 27 -- Comanche's Ward player of the year as All-Big Country 3A teams announced: While it was a new experience in postseason play for Brandon Hawk this past basketball season, Amber Ward was back in familiar territory. Ward led the Comanche girls to the Class 3A state tournament for the second year in a row, and this time the Maidens conquered Austin.

March 27 -- Wylie, Big Spring showdown to highlight Track Classic: There may not be much of a rivalry between the girls track teams from Big Spring and Wylie, but they have a lot of respect for each other.

March 27 -- Wildcats keep on winning: The Abilene Christian University baseball team extended its winning streak to 11 games with an 8-5 victory over Mankato State Thursday at Crutcher Scott Field.

March 26 -- Notes while contemplating the Final Four (Al Pickett): A few notes and quotes while thinking I'm glad I didn't get in a NCAA basketball tournament office pool this year. I would have had the four No. 1 seeds, but, of course, North Carolina is the only top seed to earn to earn a trip to San Antonio this weekend....

March 26 -- Tickets still available for big race in April (Ted Dunnam): Don't worry if you haven't purchased tickets for the Coca-Cola 300 or the Texas 500 to be held April 4-5 at Texas Motor Speedway because there is still some availability.

March 26 -- Sweetwater to honor retiring football coach: SWEETWATER - Most of the Sweetwater High School Booster Club knew Tom Ritchey doesn't like to be thrown into the limelight. Humility is one of his strongest traits.

March 26 -- McMurry golf coach to retire at end of season: McMurry University head golf coach Tommy Estes has announced that he will retire following the conclusion of the 1998 season.

March 26 -- Prairie Dogs sign two to contracts: George Preston, the top relief pitcher in the Texas-Louisiana League last year, is returning to the Abilene Prairie Dogs this season.

March 26 -- AHS has nine players named to all-District soccer team: Abilene High may have claimed the district championship, but regular season runner-up San Angelo Central was first in balloting for the all-District 7-5A boys soccer team, which was released Wednesday.

March 26 -- Big Country Class 2A basketball team announced: This year, the Cisco kids grabbed the spotlight. Cayla Petree is the girls player of the year and Chancellor Fletcher is the boys player of the year, giving Cisco both honors on the Abilene Reporter-News Class 2A All-Big Country basketball team for the 1997-98 season.

March 25 -- All-weather tracks becoming more commonplace (Bill Hart): More and more area school districts are building new all-weather tracks. To help justify the expense, they want to host at least one meet, regardless if only five or six schools sign up to compete.

March 25 -- It was a week that was for Abilene golfers (Al Pickett): What a weekend for Abilene's pro golfers, huh? Here are a few tidbits as way of an update on Charles Coody, Bob Estes and Jaxon Brigman, who made Abilene proud with their performances last weekend:

March 25 -- Class A All-Big Country basketball teams named: Juniors Kimberly Moore and Sarah Dodds seem to be taking turns leading their respective teams to the Class A girls state basketball tournament.

March 25 -- Several area players land on All-State teams: Seven area players have been named to the 1997-98 Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' all-state teams - including the girls Class 3A Player of the Year, Amber Ward from state champion Comanche.

March 25 -- Hot ACU baseball team wins two more: The torrid Abilene Christian University baseball team notched its ninth and tenth victories in a row by sweeping a doubleheader Tuesday from Concordia University, 7-2 and 12-7 at Scott Field.

March 25 -- Bears beat Cowboys, 24-7: WACO - After staying relatively close for the first four innings, the Hardin-Simmons University baseball team saw Baylor explode for 19 runs in the next three innings for a 24-7 victory over the Cowboys at Ferrell Field.

March 25 -- Indians beat Tarleton State, 11-4: STEPHENVILLE - Jim Wollscheid notched a school-record 12 strikeouts Tuesday afternoon to help guide McMurry University to an 11-4 baseball victory over Tarleton State University at Cecil Ballow Complex.

March 25 -- San Angelo golfer leading pack in 4-5A tourney: Liz Wardlaw began her day with a triple and ended it with a double, which isn't a bad outing in softball. But since it was the District 4-5A golf tournament in which she was competing, the San Angelo Central junior certainly would have liked a better start and finish to her round.

March 25 -- Eagles lose to Midland: MIDLAND - A crucial error in the second inning opened the door for a six-run inning by Midland High in an 11-6 District 4-5A baseball victory over Abilene High.

March 25 -- Cougars win a wild one: Fans in the District 4-5A baseball area better fasten their seat belts because it's going to be a wild season. After squandering a 7-0 lead, it took an incredible catch by Cooper center fielder Adam Riddle to preserve a 10-9 Cougar victory over Midland Lee Tuesday at Cougar Field.

March 24 -- Former Cooper great has an agent now (Al Pickett): It didn't take Bill Blakeley long to sell Indiana University star Andrae Patterson. By the time the Dallas sports agent finished our telephone interview Monday afternoon, I was ready to join the bandwagon. Blakeley has that kind of infectious personality.

March 24 -- Spring football training begins at ACU: Three weeks of spring football practice began Monday at Abilene Christian University.

March 24 -- Lady Wildcats sweep twinbill: The Abilene Christian softball team banged out 24 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Pittsburg State on Monday at Scott Field, 10-2 and 6-1.

March 24 -- Wylie opens district baseball play with win: MERKEL - Scott Bull scattered four hits over five innings and the Wylie bats came alive as the Bulldogs opened the District 6-3A season with an impressive 12-1 victory at Merkel Monday.

March 24 -- Lady Bulldogs fall to Merkel: MERKEL - Merkel starting pitcher Karla Williamson outdueled Wylie hurler Julie Jones on Monday as the Lady Badgers claimed a 5-1 District 6-3A softball victory over Wylie.

March 24 -- Cougars in fourth, Eagles in sixth in 4-5A golf tourney: MIDLAND - Matt Smith fired a 74 to pace the Cooper golf team, but Midland Lee took the first round lead of the District 4-5A with a 298.

March 23 -- March Madness beats shopping, that's for sure (Candy Reagan): I don't claim to completely understand March Madness. But I do enjoy it.

March 23 -- Bonanza Cutting ends 8 days of exciting competition: The 1998 Bonanza Cutting came to a final close Sunday evening. All in all, this turned out to be one of the best Bonanza Cuttings. Over $600,000 in prize money and awards was given to the winners over the past 8 days of competition beginning Sunday March 15.

March 23 -- Mound work leads to two Cougar wins: KELLER - Strong pitching led Cooper High School to a pair of baseball victories Saturday at Fossil Ridge High School.

March 23 -- Lady Eagles take win in semifinals: SAN MARCOS - Abilene High beat San Marcos, a state finalist a year ago, in the semifinals Saturday of the San Marcos softball tournament.

March 23 -- It was a great day for golf ... Abilene style: Sunday may have been one of the most remarkable days in Abilene golf history. Cut another stroke here and there and it might have been incredible.

March 23 -- Local golf teams hoping to win trip to region tournament: The four-round race to decide the District 4-5A golf championships officially begins today and Tuesday with the boys and girls teams at Abilene High and Cooper hoping to earn trips to the Region I-5A tournament.

March 22 -- Midland defeats Abilene High in soccer playoff match: MIDLAND - After scoring on its first shot of the game, the Midland Lee boys soccer team withstood an onslaught from the Abilene High offense to claim a 1-0 victory Saturday in a Region I-5A soccer playoff game at the Lee High School field.

March 22 -- Cooper track teams take Rigsby Relays: RICHLAND HILLS - They went about it in different ways, but the Cooper track teams got the job done Friday night in the Rigsby Relays. The Cooper boys won the team title in the last event while the Lady Cougars rolled to their crown with 197 points.

March 22 -- Brownwood tops Wylie in title game: BROWNWOOD - The Wylie baseball team gave the game away to the host team Saturday. The Bulldogs committed four of their five errors in the fifth inning and Brownwood put the game away with a 10-run fifth to claim the championship at the Brownwood Invitational.

March 22 -- Softball: Texas A&M-Kingsville 3-1, ACU 1-8: KINGSVILLE - Abilene Christian University finally salvaged the final game Saturday of a four-game Lone Star Conference women's softball series, but it was not a good weekend for the Lady Wildcats.

March 22 -- Reining joins the USET disciplines (Lynda Rae): The United States Equestrian Team (USET) Board of Trustees has voted to assume responsibility for the international riding discipline of reining.

March 21 -- Softball: Texas A&M Kingsville sweeps ACU in doubleheader: KINGSVILLE -- Texas A&M-Kingsville pitcher Amanda Reed proved to be a little too much for the Abilene Christian University softball team to handle. Reed pitched all 10 innings Friday and gave up three earned runs in the Javelinas' 8-7 victory over the Lady Wildcats in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams.

March 21 -- Softball: AHS wins pair of games to advance in San Marcos tournament: SAN MARCOS -- Abilene High rolled to two more victories Friday in the San Marcos softball tournament to advance to the quarterfinals.

March 21 -- Bonanza Cutting results: The pressure was on Friday at The Bonanza Cutting with the lineup of the second go-round of the Open 4-year-olds and the second go-round of the NonPro 4-year-olds competing for spots in Sunday's Finals.

March 21 -- Soccer playoff winner advances to regional quarterfinals: MIDLAND -- The last time Abilene High and Midland Lee met on the soccer field, the District 7-5A boys title was on the line. Today, the stakes are even higher.

March 21 -- Baseball: Wylie 3, Coppers Cove 2: BROWNWOOD -- Wylie's Grant Gregg didn't have his best stuff on the mound Friday but he saved his heroices for his offense. The senior laced a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to propel the Bulldogs past Coppers Cove and into the championship game of the Bluebonnet Classic baseball tournament.

March 21 -- Softball: Wylie 6, Clyde 1: CLYDE -- Wylie smacked 18 hits to roll to 6-1 in District 6-3A softball play with a 12-6 victory over Clyde Friday.

March 21 -- McMurry thrashes Grinnell College 40-1: The McMurry University baseball team posted the second-largest margin of victory in NCAA Division III history Friday afternoon in the Abilene Intercollegiate Classic, thrashing Grinnell College 40-1 at Walt Driggers Field.

March 20 -- Wylie pounds Fort Worth Poly, 18-2: BROWNWOOD -- The Wylie boys baseball team began play in the Brownwood Bluebonnet Classic on Thursday with a bang, pummeling Fort Worth Poly, 18-2.

March 20 -- Wylie overcomes errors, holds on for 8-7 softball win: The Wylie softball team overcame a season-high seven errors, holding on for an 8-7 victory over Coleman Thursday at the Wylie High School field.

March 20 -- ACU blasts Colorado School of Mines in doubleheader: The Abilene Christian University baseball team roughed up Colorado School of Mines in their doubleheader Thursday at Crutcher Scott Field, outscoring the Orediggers 31-14 on the day.

March 20 -- ACU hitter 'not comfortable' yet at plate (Ted Dunnam Column): Cody Salyers, he of the .423 batting average, says he currently isn't all that comfortable at the plate.

March 20 -- HSU takes pair in Abilene Classic baseball tournament: Hardin-Simmons won games the easy way and the hard way Thursday during the first round of games at the Abilene Classic baseball tournament.

March 19 -- HSU, McMurry to hold Abilene Intercollegiate baseball tournament: For the second consecutive year, Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University will play host to the Abilene Intercollegiate baseball tournament, a three-day, 18-game tournament slated to begin at 11 a.m. today at both Hunter Field and Driggers Field.

March 19 -- ACU sweeps doubleheader with Colorado School of Mines: Abilene Christian University scored 35 runs Wednesday to sweep a baseball doubleheader from Colorado School of Mines at Scott Field.

March 19 -- Traffic situation should be better at Texas 500 this year: For those planning to attend the Texas 500 in two weekends at Texas Motor Speedway, the news is good.

March 19 -- Patterson may, may not play in all-star game: Andrae Patterson might be coming back to his home state of Texas to play in a basketball game next week.

March 19 -- Bonanza Cutting results: Wednesday, the Bonanza Cutting began at 8 a.m. and did not finish until 11 p.m. A total of 122 horses worked Wednesday and out of that bunch 56 of those left the Coliseum with paychecks for the day's work.

March 18 -- AHS blasts Cooper 17-0: The Abilene High baseball team didn't need any luck of the Irish, four-leaf clovers or any other good-luck charms Tuesday.

March 18 -- Golf Corner: CBS Sports is scheduled to replay one of the memorable rounds of golf on April 12, just prior to its Masters coverage, when it airs the Shell's Wonderful World of Golf match played in 1964 between Ben Hogan and Sam Snead.

March 18 -- Soccer playoffs: Abilene High 3, Lubbock Coronado 2 (OT): Playing in conditions better suited for mud wrestling than soccer, the Abilene High Eagles survived a war with Lubbock Coronado to advance into the regional round of the Region I-5A boys soccer playoffs.

March 17 -- AHS, Cooper tilt may be delayed a day: The anticipated matchup between Abilene High and Cooper may have to wait another day. The game, which was scheduled to open the District 4-5A season today, will probably be pushed back at least a day.

March 16 -- Opening day of Bonanza Cutting sets record: The 1998 Bonanza Cutting is off to a great start with a total of 104 entries in the First Go-Round of the Open 5/6 Year Olds. Sunday's action-packed day marked the largest Open 5/6 Year Old class in Bonanza Cutting show history.
