in Abilene thrilled for Tennessee, granddaughter (Al Pickett): Needless to say, John and Delphia Scott of Abilene
are still beaming with pride today. And rightfully so. Their granddaughter,
Tamika Catchings, was the leading scorer Sunday night for Tennessee
as the Lady Vols completed a 39-0 season and captured their third
straight NCAA women's national basketball championship.

Garcia found a way to be in two places at once: Kelly Garcia has found time to compete in soccer
and track, even if both sports happen on the same day. It happened
at the Concho Belle Relays in San Angelo, Cooper's second track
meet of the season, but Kelly's first.

weekend in San Antonio. At no time did Currin believe he was even

is soon headed his way.

While it was a new experience
in postseason play for Brandon Hawk this past basketball season,
Amber Ward was back in familiar territory. Ward led the Comanche

has nine players named to all-District soccer team: Abilene High may have claimed the district championship,
but regular season runner-up San Angelo Central was first in balloting
for the all-District 7-5A boys soccer team, which was released
Wednesday.

Country Class 2A basketball team announced: This year, the Cisco kids grabbed the spotlight.
Cayla Petree is the girls player of the year and Chancellor Fletcher
is the boys player of the year, giving Cisco both honors on the
Abilene Reporter-News Class 2A All-Big Country basketball team
for the 1997-98 season.

new all-weather tracks. To help justify the expense, they want

be taking turns leading their respective teams to the Class A
girls state basketball tournament.

Seven area players have been named to the 1997-98 Texas Association
of Basketball Coaches' all-state teams - including the girls Class
3A Player of the Year, Amber Ward from state champion Comanche.

torrid Abilene Christian University baseball team notched its
ninth and tenth victories in a row by sweeping a doubleheader
Tuesday from Concordia University, 7-2 and 12-7 at Scott Field.

staying relatively close for the first four innings, the Hardin-Simmons
University baseball team saw Baylor explode for 19 runs in the

- Jim Wollscheid notched a school-record 12 strikeouts Tuesday
afternoon to help guide McMurry University to an 11-4 baseball

Angelo golfer leading pack in 4-5A tourney: Liz Wardlaw began her day with a triple and ended
it with a double, which isn't a bad outing in softball. But since
it was the District 4-5A golf tournament in which she was competing,
the San Angelo Central junior certainly would have liked a better
start and finish to her round.

lose to Midland: MIDLAND - A
crucial error in the second inning opened the door for a six-run
inning by Midland High in an 11-6 District 4-5A baseball victory
over Abilene High.

win a wild one: Fans in the
District 4-5A baseball area better fasten their seat belts because
it's going to be a wild season. After squandering a 7-0 lead,
it took an incredible catch by Cooper center fielder Adam Riddle
to preserve a 10-9 Cougar victory over Midland Lee Tuesday at
Cougar Field.

Cooper great has an agent now (Al Pickett): It didn't take Bill Blakeley long to sell Indiana
University star Andrae Patterson. By the time the Dallas sports
agent finished our telephone interview Monday afternoon, I was
ready to join the bandwagon. Blakeley has that kind of infectious
personality.

weeks of spring football practice began Monday at Abilene Christian
University.

Abilene Christian softball team banged out 24 hits in a doubleheader

Sunday evening. All in all, this turned out to be one of the best
Bonanza Cuttings. Over $600,000 in prize money and awards was
given to the winners over the past 8 days of competition beginning
Sunday March 15.

to a pair of baseball victories Saturday at Fossil Ridge High
School.

finalist a year ago, in the semifinals Saturday of the San Marcos
softball tournament.

game, the Midland Lee boys soccer team withstood an onslaught
from the Abilene High offense to claim a 1-0 victory Saturday
in a Region I-5A soccer playoff game at the Lee High School field.

Cooper track teams take Rigsby Relays: RICHLAND
HILLS - They went about it in different ways, but the Cooper track
teams got the job done Friday night in the Rigsby Relays. The
Cooper boys won the team title in the last event while the Lady
Cougars rolled to their crown with 197 points.

tops Wylie in title game: BROWNWOOD
- The Wylie baseball team gave the game away to the host team
Saturday. The Bulldogs committed four of their five errors in
the fifth inning and Brownwood put the game away with a 10-run
fifth to claim the championship at the Brownwood Invitational.

- Abilene Christian University finally salvaged the final game
Saturday of a four-game Lone Star Conference women's softball

Reed proved to be a little too much for the Abilene Christian

over the Lady Wildcats in the Lone Star Conference opener for
both teams.
