May 25 -- Prairie Dogs lose opener to Dillas, 9-8: AMARILLO - Barry Jones made the right move as a player-manager when it counted Sunday night in the season opener for his Abilene Prairie Dogs. Nonetheless, the Dogs ended up falling to the red-hot Amarillo Dillas, 9-8.

May 23 -- Bob Estes, playing best golf ever, ready for a break: FORT WORTH - Abilene's Bob Estes, experiencing his best year ever on the PGA tour, is ready to give up golf. Not entirely, mind you. But he's certainly ready for a lengthy break.

May 23 -- Wylie Bulldogs have little trouble with Jacksboro, 10-0: Wylie got in its bi-district baseball playoff game before lightning in the area could interfere with the contest, but the Jacksboro Tigers were already crispy critters - burned to a crisp. Grant Gregg struck out 12 of the 23 batters he faced and allowed only three hits in a 10-0 victory over the Tigers Friday night at Hunter Field.

May 23 -- Eagles playing El Paso team a lot like themselves: MONAHANS - When the Abilene High baseball team takes the field today in its Region I-5A quarterfinal matchup with seventh-ranked El Paso Socorro, it should be a matchup of similar teams.

May 23 -- ACU women lead NCAA track meet after second day: EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Abilene Christian University delivered a 1-2 punch Friday in the women's discus at the NCAA Division II track meet at Olympic Festival Stadium.

May 23 -- Bangs defeats De Leon in Class 2A playoff game: Kenny Hogan hurled a four-hitter as Bangs won a 5-3 decision Friday night over De Leon at Hunter Field. The victory put De Leon within one game of being eliminated in the best-of-three Class 2A baseball playoff series.

May 23 -- Eastland eliminated from playoffs: MINERAL WELLS - Iowa Park eliminated District 6-3A runner-up Eastland, 5-4, in the bi-district round of the Class 3A baseball playoffs Friday night, edging out the Mavericks with three runs in the bottom of the final inning.

May 22 -- New Abilene hockey coach sees a dream come true: Anything is possible in Texas. Don't believe it? Well, just ask Jeff Triano. Triano came to Texas for the first time two years ago with the dream of becoming a hockey coach. Now, two years later, that dream became a reality when he was named Thursday as the head coach of the Aviators, Abilene's new team in the Western Professional Hockey League.

May 22 -- After first day, Colonial has somewhat of an Abilene flavor: FORT WORTH - No wind, perfect greens, minimal heat. Combine that with the fact that Harrison Frazar was in the first group off the tee box Thursday at the MasterCard Colonial, and one could not have asked for a more ideal combination at Colonial Country Club. Frazar, a one-time Abilenian, took advantage of a delightful morning, carding a 6-under-par 64 to take a two-stroke lead over four players.

May 22 -- Frazar cut his golfing teeth at Fairway Oaks: FORT WORTH - The first time Harrison Frazar took a meaningful swing with a golf club, he was 10 years old and standing on the driving range at Fairway Oaks Country Club.

May 22 -- Wylie Bulldogs open post-season play against Jacksboro: The Wylie baseball team seems to be cranked up to maximum overdrive, seeking another possible long playoff run.

May 22 -- AHS star signs letter-of-intent with NMMI: Odis Dolton, who starred in three sports at Abilene High this year, decided to play just two sports in junior college. Dolton signed a letter-of-intent Thursday to play basketball and baseball at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M.

May 22 -- Three-day cutting this weekend at Expo Center: The Big Country and West Central Texas Cutting Horse Association affiliates will combine efforts for a 3-day cutting Friday through Sunday at the Taylor County Expo Center Horse Barn.

May 22 -- Coahoma beats Stamford in bi-district action, 7-1: T.J. Green not only did his usual bit on the mound Thursday, but also found his batting stroke. Green combined with Delvin White on a three-hitter as Coahoma downed Stamford 7-1 in their Class 2A bi-district baseball playoff game in a battle of Bulldogs at Walt Driggers Field.

May 21 -- Kittley named NCAA Division II men's track coach of the year: COLLINSVILLE, Ill. -- Wes Kittley, whose Abilene Christian University track team won the indoor championship in March and is favored to win the outdoor title this weekend, was named the NCAA Division II men's track coach of the year Wednesday night.

May 21 -- Perennial powers battle for NCAA Division II mens outdoor track championship: EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The NCAA Division II men's outdoor champions have come from Abilene Christian University and St. Augustine's College since 1982.

May 19 -- Former Red Sox draft pick finds home with Prairie Dogs: Mike Perini's stint with the Boston Red Sox organization didn't last long, but a medical condition helped spoil his first impression at the professional level. Perini, an outfielder who was a sixth-round draft pick out of high school from Carlsbad, N.M., had to have kidney surgery in February 1997 and was released by the Red Sox early this spring.

May 12 -- McMurry in NCAA regional baseball tourney for first time ... hosting it, too! McMurry University received a double dose of good news Monday. Not only did the Indians receive their first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III West Regional baseball tournament, but McMurry will also be the host site for the regional tournament.

May 12 -- Class 5A and 4A State Tennis: Eagles' duo makes it to championship match: AUSTIN - Mitch Aston didn't expect it and neither did Cody Chapman. Can you say cakewalk? The Abilene High doubles team, in advancing to the Class 5A state championship match Monday, made it look ridiculously easy at the Penick-Allison Courts.

May 12 -- Class 4A State Golf: Snyder Lady Tigers trail by 20 shots: AUSTIN - The Snyder Lady Tigers have their work cut out today if they are to repeat as Class 4A state golf champions. They totalled 329 strokes Monday at Roy Kizer Golf Course, four strokes over what they shot the first day a year ago, but they trail Dallas Highland Park by 20 shots.

May 12 -- Class 3A State Golf: Wylie girls golf team has good shot at second place: AUSTIN - A state title is probably out of the question, but a silver medal is well within the grasp of the Wylie girls golf team.

Battered and bruised but certainly not beaten, the Lady Bears shot a 390, good enough to keep them in contention for their second consecutive Class A state title.

May 5 -- Cooper baseball coach replaced by former player: The Cooper baseball team is bringing one of its own home next season. After a disappointing 15-11-1 season (4-8 in district) that saw Cooper finish tied for last placed in the District 4-5A and without a playoff spot for the first time in seven years, athletic director Randy Allen announced Monday that he has replaced head coach Jim Mavroulis with former Cooper standout Scotty Pugh.

May 5 -- Pugh was one of the most successful Cougars ever: Scotty Pugh is one of the most decorated athletes in Cooper High School history. A starting quarterback in football, a point guard in basketball and a four-year all-district and three-time all-state first baseman in baseball, Pugh was a star at Cooper from 1986-89.

May 5 -- A final look at the regional track meets (Bill Hart): Wrapping up the high school regional track meets while hoping it is cooler at the state meet next week.

Row, pitching in relief of Mandi Hacker, retired the final seven Abilene High batters of the game as Midland Lee held on to win a 2-1 thriller over the Lady Eagles at Will Hair Park in the Region I-5A softball quarterfinals.

May 5 -- Stanton football stars commits to ACU: Tyron Davis, who was a wide receiver on Stanton's Class 2A state championship football team last fall, committed Monday to play for Abilene Christian University.

The Dallas Stars advanced in the NHL playoffs; the San Antonio Spurs won their first-round battle in the NBA playoffs; the Houston Rockets put up an amazing fight against the top-seeded team in the NBA; and high schoolers are heading to state competition.

May 4 -- Lady Eagles playing for continued playoff life today: Abilene High has beaten Midland Lee twice in girls softball this season. Now the Lady Eagles will have to do it again today - this time with even more at stake. The two District 4-5A rivals will meet today at Will Hair Park in the Region I-5A quarterfinals.

May 4 -- ACU golfers start NCAA playoff action today: EDMOND, Okla. - Abilene Christian University's 12th straight appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs in men's golf begins Monday.

May 4 -- Tennis awards banquet this Tuesday (Rick Meyers): The annual Abilene Tennis Association Awards Banquet will be held Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Briarstone Manor.

May 3 -- McMurry claims ASC tourney title: The McMurry University bats continued to lead the way as the Indians pounded out 16 hits Saturday -- including two more home runs -- in a 16-11 victory over Howard Payne in the championship game of the American Southwest Conference tournament at Walt Driggers Field.

May 3 -- Region I-3A track: ODESSA -- There may have been some nail biting, but the Wylie girls were able to capture their fourth straight Region I-3A team track championship Saturday.

In Januray, 1984, the first 15 charter members were installed to the Athletic Hall of Honor.

May 2 -- McMurry thrashes Sul Ross, advances to title game: There is a power surge at Walt Driggers Field.

May 2 -- Cooper shuts out Odessa, 5-0: With eight seniors starting in the season finale, the Cooper baseball was relaxed in its game against Odessa High. The result was something Cougar fans hadn't witnessed often this season -- a shutout victory.

May 2 -- Region I-2A track: Kyle Hunter of Eldorado hasn't been recruited by college track coaches, but that will change next week.

May 2 -- Region I-3A track: ODESSA -- Eastland's Nathan Kidd hated to see the Monahans pole vaulter miss his attempt at 15-6 Friday at the Region I-3A track meet at Ratliff Stadium.

May 2 -- Region I-5A tennis: LUBBOCK -- If God wasn't watching over Abilene's tennis players Friday, then Harry Houdini was.

May 2 -- Region I-5A track: LUBBOCK -- Whether Cooper athletes got off on the right foot or the wrong foot, it didn't seem to matter Friday at the Region I-5A track meet.

May 2 -- Region II-A track: Tara Jernigan went to the Class 2A state meet last year and now she's going to the Class A meet, but in a different event.

May 1 -- McMurry wins ASC tourney opener against Hardin-Simmons: Third seed Sul Ross State upset second seed Howard Payne in the first game of the American Southwest Conference Tournament Thursday, 7-5. McMurry starting pitcher Ryan Snyder and a host of Indians hitters made sure they wouldn't suffer the same fate in the nightcap.

May 1 -- Invitations to nationals on line this weekend: Invitations to the 1998 NCAA Division II national tennis tournaments will be decided this weekend at Abilene Christian University.

May 1 -- Win gives AHS another district baseball title: ODESSA -- The Abilene High Eagles are in an enviable position. They are the only team that controls its own destiny for the district championship.
