when they play Alm Lisel of Austria in an exhibition game.
Nov. 12 -- Rochester

two athletes for next year.
Nov. 12 -- CHS,
AHS athletes named to All District volleyball team: Cooper junior April Coffield was named the outstanding
hitter on District 4-5A volleyball team, which was announced Wednesday.
Nov. 11 -- Allen
era at Cooper has meant a lot more Ws than Ls (Al Pickett):
Since the Randy Allen era began
at Cooper, very few teams can claim a winning record against the
Cougars. Allen owns a 66-30-2 mark in his eight seasons as head
football coach at his alma mater.
Nov. 11 -- Cougars
enter playoffs without leading wide receiver: The Cooper football team has overcome adversity
all season. If it wasn't the backup quarterback, it was a linebacker,
or another linebacker, or another linebacker.
Nov. 11 -- Typical
quick, swarming Wylie defense still impressive: One aspect opposing football coaches mention in
their assessment of the 1998 Wylie defense never changes. The
overall quickness, aggressiveness and swarming ability the Bulldogs
display on defense is almost always what makes the biggest impression.
Nov. 11 -- Aviators
continue winning at home against El Paso: To be the best you've got to beat the best. The
Abilene Aviators captured their 10th consecutive home victory
by knocking off the two-time defending champion El Paso Buzzards,
3-2, Tuesday in front of 3,312 fans at the Taylor County Coliseum.
Nov. 10 -- ASC
crown on the line this Saturday with HSU vs. McMurry (Al Pickett): Last summer, officials at Hardin-Simmons University
and McMurry University came up with idea of the Wilford Moore
Trophy to be presented annually to the winner of the cross-town
showdown between the Cowboys and Indians.
Nov. 10 -- One
of top Aviator defenders rules with speed: If speed kills, Eric Brule could be arrested as
a multiple offender. He takes two running steps and he races onto
the ice during player introductions. He moves with such speed
the spotlight can hardly keep up with him.
Nov. 10 -- Hot
topic at Breckenridge Jr. High: Cross country (Bill Hart):
Breckenridge junior high school
had a practice fire drill Monday afternoon. Had it been the real
thing, coach Gail Edwards would never have known it.
Nov. 10 -- Players
of the Week: Here are the final
area high school football players of the week for the 1998 season
as selected by the Abilene Reporter-News.
Nov. 10 -- Breckenridge
finishes on top in final AP poll:
La Marque, winner of three straight Class 4A titles, and Class
A Tenaha wrapped up wire-to-wire seasons at No. 1 in The Associated
Press high school football poll on Monday.
Nov. 9 -- A
tale of two quarterbacks (Candy Reagan):
Kerry Collins needs to steal a page from the life of Doug Flutie.
Flutie makes the most of his opportunities. So far, Collins has
only blown his.
Nov. 9 -- Do
yourself a favor and go to a tournament (Rick Meyers): Everyone should come out and watch a high school
regional tennis tournament. The ebb and flow of emotion is something
to experience.
Nov. 8 -- Aviators
win in rematch against Fort Worth:
The Abilene Aviators shook off their worst loss of the young season
and delivered payback to the Fort Worth Brahmas in front of a
near-capacity crowd at the Taylor County Coliseum.
Nov. 8 -- ACU
runners do well in Regional cross country meet: High altitude or low altitude, it doesn't matter.
Colorado colleges usually dominate the NCAA Division II South
Central Region cross country meet and they did it again Saturday
at Pecan Ridge.
Nov. 8 -- Results
of high school regional cross country meets: The Breckenridge girls, Katherine Duncan of Roscoe
and Mindy Sullivan of Colorado City won first places at regional
cross country meets Saturday.
Nov. 8 -- Moody
Madness at ACU and other tidbits (Bill Hart): Sports smorgasbord, while wondering whatever happened
to former Haskell and Angelo State football player Charles Franklin:
Nov. 8 -- HSU
soccer team notches 200th win:
The Hardin-Simmons University mens soccer reached a milestone
Saturday in its history. In addition to winning their first ever
conference championship with a 5-1 win over LeTourneau, the win
was the 200th win for the program.
Nov. 8 -- Football
legend will be missed: Readers
of my column over the years know that I'm a Kansas State graduate.
Nov. 8 -- Schools
select sites for next weekend's football games: While most area schools were furiously trying to
find sites for the weekend bi-district games Friday night, Shotwell
Stadium was empty.
Nov. 8 -- Tournament
finishes up, time to raise money for BVL Fund (Mae Fraser): The fifth annual Mixed Championship Tournament
was held last weekend. Here are the winners, ranked by handicap
scores:
Nov. 7 -- Cougars
receiver injured, out for playoffs:
Cooper's 41-14 win Friday night over cross-town rival Abilene
High proved to be a costly one for the Cougars.
Nov. 7 -- Hardin-Simmons
hopes to stay undefeated in Conference play: BELTON -- Now it's Mary Hardin-Baylor's turn to
face the buzzsaw.
Nov. 7 -- McMurry
faces Howard Payne's top-ranked defense:
One more test remains for McMurry University's football team before
the Indians can start thinking about winning the American Southwest
Conference championship.
Nov. 7 -- ACU
tries to stop Texas A&M-Kingsville:
KINGSVILLE -- The problem isn't deciphering what Texas A&M-Kingsville
will do today, it's figuring out how to stop it.
Nov. 7 -- Fort
Worth Brahmas down Aviators:
FORT WORTH -- The fists were flying at the Hangar Thursday night,
and apparently the Aviators had some aggression left over Friday
night in Fort Worth.
Nov. 7 -- South
Central Region cross country meet to take place: The Adams State women's team has dominated the
NCAA Division II cross country meet as long as Bill Clinton has
been President of the United States. But their victories have
been more dominating.
Nov. 7 -- Red
Raider Club meets in Abilene:
The NCAA sanctions are in the background and Texas Tech is going
full speed ahead hoping to ensure a better future in the Big 12
Conference.
Nov. 6 -- Aviators
beat Jackalopes again in "hot" game: The war is on. Round two of the I-20 Rumble once
again went to the Abilene Aviators, 4-3 in a shootout, but the
Odessa Jackalopes didn't go down without a fight in front of 2,607
fans at the Taylor County Coliseum.
Nov. 6 -- Crosstown
rivalry is all about pride and bragging rights: The Abilene High and Cooper football teams know
all about each other. Head coaches Steve Warren and Randy Allen
could probably go into this game without looking at game tapes
(though they won't).
Nov. 6 -- Cooper
players: Do NOT read this! (fans can, though) (Jeff Walker):
All Cooper football players are
instructed to skip over this article until Saturday. I don't want
any part in an argument stating Cooper looked past tonight's opponent,
the Abilene High Eagles. Fans, however, continue to read.
Nov. 6 -- Wylie
Bulldogs to warm up for playoffs against Grape Creek: With its bi-district playoff matchup already set,
the Wylie football team still has one more regular-season game
left to get set for life in the fast lane - postseason play.
Nov. 6 -- Picks
and nominations for all-state team (Bill Hart): The high school football regular season comes to
an end tonight, but the playoffs are not the only thing left.
Coaches have until next Friday (Nov. 13) to nominate their most
deserving athletes for the Associated Press' all-state football
team. The actual teams will be released during the week of the
state championship games.
Nov. 6 -- Playoff
spots still up for grabs on last regular Friday night: Area football teams have played nine games, but
only a few have locked up spots in the playoffs which start next
week.
Nov. 6 -- ACHS
needs to win Saturday in El Paso to make playoffs: EL PASO - The Abilene Christian High School football
team's postseason hopes come down to Saturday's 3 p.m. game against
Jesus Chapel. It will be a tall order.
Nov. 6 -- McMurry
receiver making most of his "new" sport (Ted Dunnam):
Reggie Sterns never thought something
like this would happen. After playing only baseball in high school
at Waxahachie, and making plans to play that sport in college,
Sterns surprised himself and everyone else when he suddenly changed
directions and came to McMurry University to play football.
Nov. 6 -- Friday
Night Football: List of this
week's local/area high school football games
Nov. 6 -- Cross
country regional meets Saturday: Area
high school cross country runners will compete in 10 regional
meets Saturday in Lubbock, Arlington, Pasadena and San Antonio.
But the most interesting race will be at Lubbock where two defending
state champions square off.
Nov. 5 -- Loss
to Permian was key to Cougars', Eagles' season (Al Pickett):
Oddly enough, the defining moment
in both Abilene High's and Cooper's football seasons may have
come on the artificial turf at Odessa's Ratliff Stadium. Both
occurred in a loss to Odessa Permian, but the subsequent results
sent the Eagles' and Cougars' seasons spinning in opposite directions.
Nov. 5 -- Walker
continues to have success for Eagles: It
doesn't matter which side of the ball Abilene High head coach
Steve Warren puts Michael Walker, the result will inevitably be
the same. Successful.
Nov. 5 -- ACU
receiver coming into his won this season (Ted Dunnam): Casey Whittle won't ever be confused with Jerry
Rice. But if one draws a comparison to Steve Largent, at least
you're beginning to get in the same ballpark.
Nov. 5 -- Big
quarterbacks come in small packages at Albany (Bill Hart): Don't even try to tell Tony Wayne Wheeler or Albany
football fans that he is too small to play quarterback. No one
will buy it and they have a 9-0 record to back it up.
Nov. 5 -- Naud
and Raby are "protectors" for Aviators: If forward Eric Naud and defenseman Matthieu Raby
ordered a pizza, they could have it delivered to the Taylor County
Coliseum penalty box.
Nov. 5 -- Jobs
for college athletes a non-issue (Al Pickett): One of the "hot button" issues in college
athletics earlier this year has actually turned into a non-issue.
Nov. 4 -- Tradition
returns: Cougars, Eagles meet in regular season finale (Al
Pickett): A long-standing tradition
is being revived Friday night. There was a time when the cross-town
rival games were always played in the final regular-season game
of the year. They were as much a part of the high school football
tradition as cheerleaders and marching bands.
Nov. 4 -- Football
format for state champs could change (Bill Hart): So you don't like the present format that is used
to name Texas high school football state champions? It could change
in the next couple of years.
Nov. 4 -- Ford
top of the line(backer) for Cooper: The
middle linebacker on defense is the equivalant to the quarterback
on offense. One of the best defensive signal-callers in District
4-5A is Cooper's Coby Ford.
Nov. 4 -- AHS
cross country athlete more dedicated this year: Kristen Adkins runs about 25 miles a week and enjoys
every step of the way. That happens when you are successful.
Nov. 4 -- Malfunction
causes ice to melt at the Hangar:
The Abilene Aviators' first-year woes continued Tuesday when it
was discovered that a power surge knocked out the electricity
Monday night causing the ice to melt at the Taylor County Coliseum.
Nov. 4 -- "Wave
for Walter" scheduled at rivalry game: The Cooper Booster Club is sponsoring a "Wave
for Walter" night Friday at the Abilene High-Cooper football
game at Shotwell Stadium.
Nov. 3 -- Players
of the Week: Here are the area
high school football players of the week as selected by the Abilene
Reporter-News.
Nov. 3 -- Long
run may have cut Zac Allen's career short (Al Pickett): JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Former Cooper all-state
quarterback Zac Allen's collegiate football career may have ended
a few games sooner than he wanted.
Nov. 3 -- Playoff
berths could be riding on that coin toss (Bill Hart): So you thought flipping a coin to determine teams
going to the high school football playoffs was a thing of the
past after overtime and point systems were introduced.
Nov. 3 -- Katy
returns to No. 1 in 5A; Breckenridge still No. 1, too: Katy, which lost the No. 1 spot in Class 5A when
it appeared four wins would have to be forfeited, returned to
the top Monday following victories off and on the field.
Nov. 3 -- HSU
still ranked no. 6 after record-setting day: Despite the fall of five school and five conference
records during Saturday's 83-6 victory over Texas Lutheran at
Shelton Stadium, Hardin-Simmons University stayed put at No. 6
in the latest NCAA Division III South regional football poll released
Monday.
Nov. 3 -- Big
Spring Invitational: Here are
the results from the Big Spring Invitational swimming meet:
Nov. 2 -- Aviators
on hot streak with four wins in four days: The Abilene Aviators had to work on Sunday so they
figured the Lord might as well work also. The Aviators shook off
a two-goal deficit and scored four goals in 21 minutes off Amarillo
goaltender Adam Lord, as Abilene knocked off the Rattlers, 4-2
in front of 2,059 at the Taylor County Coliseum.
Nov. 2 -- Youth
sports exciting, to say the least (Candy Reagan): I might not live through my children's years in
competitive youth sports. I'm one of those people who is, shall
we say, intense, during a game. I sink every bit of emotion into
it, and win or lose I usually come out drained.
Nov. 2 -- New
tournament format to be decided (Rick Meyers): On November 22, there is a meeting in Austin to
decide the new tournament format for junior players. I will also
find out the new ranking system Texas will be using. There is
no way to tell what we will come up with, but it will be modeled
to fit the USTA's tournament schedule.
Nov. 1 -- Aviators
win in a shootout: The Abilene
Aviators almost let their tempers lead to their first home loss
of the season, but Abilene remained perfect with a 3-2 shootout
victory over the Austin Ice Bats in front of 2,509 fans at the
Taylor County Coliseum.
Nov. 1 -- Eagles
defeated in Regional tennis tournament:
It's one thing to have confidence when you're expected to win,
and something else to have it when you're an underdog.
Nov. 1 -- Abilene
Aviators join competition for Mayor's Cup: The Western Professional Hockey League's Western
Division just got a little more interesting, as the Abilene Aviators
have joined San Angelo and Odessa to compete yearly for the "Mayor's
Cup."
Nov. 1 -- Abilene
High girls win District cross country meet: CARLSBAD -- The Abilene High girls cross country
team won its third straight District 4-5A cross country title
Saturday in San Angelo, and Cooper will join AHS at the regional
meet Saturday in Lubbock on the strength of its third-place finish.
Nov. 1 -- Red
Raiders come to town and other tidbits (Bill Hart): Sports smorgasbord, while wondering whatever happened
to former Sweetwater girls track athlete Tara Lemmons:
Nov. 1 -- UIL
needs to use common sense: Let's
all say it together: Hip hip hooray for the University Interscholastic
League for changing its mind and not making Katy forfeit four
football games over violating the amateur rule.
Nov. 1 -- Several
bowlers turn in scores well above averages (Mae Fraser): There were some impressive scores turned in this
past week.
Nov. 1 -- Reception
to benefit AQHF (Lynda Rae):
The American Quarter Horse Foundation will be the beneficiary
of the "You Can Make A Difference" reception on Tuesday,
Nov. 17, at the Eclipse Penthouse Restaurant at Remington Park
in Oklahoma City, Okla.
