Nov. 13 -- Cougars hope to keep playoff tradition alive: LUBBOCK - Tradition dictates that football teams from District 4-5A have dominated teams from District 3-5A in the playoffs. Cooper is hoping the tradition continues.

Nov. 13 -- Playoffs old homecoming week for San Angelo, Permian (Jeff Walker): District 4-5A will be the only district in Texas to have four teams qualify for the state playoffs. Technically, that's not entirely true.

Nov. 13 -- "Second Season" begins for area teams tonight: Coaches like to call the high school football playoffs the second season. The regular season just concluded was to gain experience and to qualify for the postseason. Now the race for state championships begins.

Nov. 13 -- Wylie's Briley signs with SMU: Hank Kuehne rode the Pony Express to the U.S. Amateur championship earlier this year. Now, Wylie's Parker Briley will try to make a name for himself at Southern Methodist University.

Nov. 13 -- Panther Creek, Blanket face off tonight: The road back to the Six-Man state championship game begins tonight for Panther Creek when the Panthers face Blanket in a bi-district game at Bangs.

Nov. 13 -- Hard work is second nature to HSU safety (Ted Dunnam): Football players who have major knee injuries are immediately faced with one key choice to make - either quit, or put in hard work to rehabilitate the injury after surgery and make a comeback.

Nov. 13 -- Coleman Bluecats back in playoffs (Bill Hart's Playoff Predictions): Bill Grissom and his coaching staff have done it again - turning a high school football program around.

Nov. 13 -- Almlies Austria 79, Abilene Christian 73: The Abilene Christian University women's basketball team lost it exhibition opener, 79-73, Thursday to Almliesl at Moody Coliseum. ACU's only lead came when the Lady 'Cats scored the first bucket of the game to take a 2-0 lead.

Nov. 13 -- State cross country meet Saturday: ROUND ROCK - Three members of the Eula boys cross country team would like to erase the bad memories of 1995 when they compete Saturday in the state meet.

Nov. 12 -- Keenum has brought McMurry to important showdown (Al Pickett): Steve Keenum's roots run deep in two of Abilene's most successful football programs, and now he has brought similar success to his alma mater.

Nov. 12 -- Area athletes take advantage of early signing: Little did Shayne McKenzie know how much working at a Haskell drive-in restaurant last spring would pay off for her.

Nov. 12 -- Koskela is Aviators' Mr. Versatile: If Abilene Aviators' head coach Jeff Triano decided to put Tehro Koskela in net to give his two goaltenders the night off, the Sweden native would be likened to Magic Johnson.

Nov. 12 -- Stephenville's Brown still having success in college (Ted Dunnam): Derrick Foster bolted for 92 yards on one play. He scored from 54 yards on another. The former La Marque star finished the night with 151 yards on four carries. And for most of the evening, Abilene Christian University linebacker Jody Brown was staring at the backs of jerseys worn by Foster and other Texas A&M-Kingsville running backs in a 56-28 loss to the Javelinas last Saturday. But ....

Nov. 12 -- ACU women open play tonight: Abilene Christian University women's basketball coach Wayne Williams will get a look at how his Lady Wildcats look in a game situation tonight when they play Alm Lisel of Austria in an exhibition game.

Nov. 12 -- Rochester begins six-man playoffs tonight: CROSBYTON - The Rochester Steers get an early jump on the Six-Man football bi-district playoffs when they meet Amherst tonight. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. in Crosbyton.

Nov. 12 -- ACU men's, women's basketball programs sign top athletes: Abilene Christian University reached into two of the state's top girls high school basketball programs to sign two athletes for next year.

Nov. 12 -- CHS, AHS athletes named to All District volleyball team: Cooper junior April Coffield was named the outstanding hitter on District 4-5A volleyball team, which was announced Wednesday.

Nov. 11 -- Allen era at Cooper has meant a lot more Ws than Ls (Al Pickett): Since the Randy Allen era began at Cooper, very few teams can claim a winning record against the Cougars. Allen owns a 66-30-2 mark in his eight seasons as head football coach at his alma mater.

Nov. 11 -- Cougars enter playoffs without leading wide receiver: The Cooper football team has overcome adversity all season. If it wasn't the backup quarterback, it was a linebacker, or another linebacker, or another linebacker.

Nov. 11 -- Typical quick, swarming Wylie defense still impressive: One aspect opposing football coaches mention in their assessment of the 1998 Wylie defense never changes. The overall quickness, aggressiveness and swarming ability the Bulldogs display on defense is almost always what makes the biggest impression.

Nov. 11 -- Aviators continue winning at home against El Paso: To be the best you've got to beat the best. The Abilene Aviators captured their 10th consecutive home victory by knocking off the two-time defending champion El Paso Buzzards, 3-2, Tuesday in front of 3,312 fans at the Taylor County Coliseum.

Nov. 10 -- ASC crown on the line this Saturday with HSU vs. McMurry (Al Pickett): Last summer, officials at Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University came up with idea of the Wilford Moore Trophy to be presented annually to the winner of the cross-town showdown between the Cowboys and Indians.

Nov. 10 -- One of top Aviator defenders rules with speed: If speed kills, Eric Brule could be arrested as a multiple offender. He takes two running steps and he races onto the ice during player introductions. He moves with such speed the spotlight can hardly keep up with him.

Nov. 10 -- Hot topic at Breckenridge Jr. High: Cross country (Bill Hart): Breckenridge junior high school had a practice fire drill Monday afternoon. Had it been the real thing, coach Gail Edwards would never have known it.

Nov. 8 -- Aviators win in rematch against Fort Worth: The Abilene Aviators shook off their worst loss of the young season and delivered payback to the Fort Worth Brahmas in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Taylor County Coliseum.

Nov. 8 -- ACU runners do well in Regional cross country meet: High altitude or low altitude, it doesn't matter. Colorado colleges usually dominate the NCAA Division II South Central Region cross country meet and they did it again Saturday at Pecan Ridge.

Nov. 8 -- Results of high school regional cross country meets: The Breckenridge girls, Katherine Duncan of Roscoe and Mindy Sullivan of Colorado City won first places at regional cross country meets Saturday.

Nov. 8 -- Moody Madness at ACU and other tidbits (Bill Hart): Sports smorgasbord, while wondering whatever happened to former Haskell and Angelo State football player Charles Franklin:

Nov. 8 -- HSU soccer team notches 200th win: The Hardin-Simmons University mens soccer reached a milestone Saturday in its history. In addition to winning their first ever conference championship with a 5-1 win over LeTourneau, the win was the 200th win for the program.

Nov. 8 -- Schools select sites for next weekend's football games: While most area schools were furiously trying to find sites for the weekend bi-district games Friday night, Shotwell Stadium was empty.

Nov. 7 -- Cougars receiver injured, out for playoffs: Cooper's 41-14 win Friday night over cross-town rival Abilene High proved to be a costly one for the Cougars.

Nov. 7 -- Hardin-Simmons hopes to stay undefeated in Conference play: BELTON -- Now it's Mary Hardin-Baylor's turn to face the buzzsaw.

Nov. 7 -- McMurry faces Howard Payne's top-ranked defense: One more test remains for McMurry University's football team before the Indians can start thinking about winning the American Southwest Conference championship.

Nov. 7 -- ACU tries to stop Texas A&M-Kingsville: KINGSVILLE -- The problem isn't deciphering what Texas A&M-Kingsville will do today, it's figuring out how to stop it.

Nov. 7 -- Fort Worth Brahmas down Aviators: FORT WORTH -- The fists were flying at the Hangar Thursday night, and apparently the Aviators had some aggression left over Friday night in Fort Worth.

Nov. 7 -- South Central Region cross country meet to take place: The Adams State women's team has dominated the NCAA Division II cross country meet as long as Bill Clinton has been President of the United States. But their victories have been more dominating.

Nov. 7 -- Red Raider Club meets in Abilene: The NCAA sanctions are in the background and Texas Tech is going full speed ahead hoping to ensure a better future in the Big 12 Conference.

Nov. 6 -- Aviators beat Jackalopes again in "hot" game: The war is on. Round two of the I-20 Rumble once again went to the Abilene Aviators, 4-3 in a shootout, but the Odessa Jackalopes didn't go down without a fight in front of 2,607 fans at the Taylor County Coliseum.

Nov. 6 -- Crosstown rivalry is all about pride and bragging rights: The Abilene High and Cooper football teams know all about each other. Head coaches Steve Warren and Randy Allen could probably go into this game without looking at game tapes (though they won't).

Nov. 6 -- Cooper players: Do NOT read this! (fans can, though) (Jeff Walker): All Cooper football players are instructed to skip over this article until Saturday. I don't want any part in an argument stating Cooper looked past tonight's opponent, the Abilene High Eagles. Fans, however, continue to read.

Nov. 6 -- Wylie Bulldogs to warm up for playoffs against Grape Creek: With its bi-district playoff matchup already set, the Wylie football team still has one more regular-season game left to get set for life in the fast lane - postseason play.

Nov. 6 -- Picks and nominations for all-state team (Bill Hart): The high school football regular season comes to an end tonight, but the playoffs are not the only thing left. Coaches have until next Friday (Nov. 13) to nominate their most deserving athletes for the Associated Press' all-state football team. The actual teams will be released during the week of the state championship games.

Nov. 6 -- Playoff spots still up for grabs on last regular Friday night: Area football teams have played nine games, but only a few have locked up spots in the playoffs which start next week.

Nov. 6 -- ACHS needs to win Saturday in El Paso to make playoffs: EL PASO - The Abilene Christian High School football team's postseason hopes come down to Saturday's 3 p.m. game against Jesus Chapel. It will be a tall order.

Nov. 6 -- McMurry receiver making most of his "new" sport (Ted Dunnam): Reggie Sterns never thought something like this would happen. After playing only baseball in high school at Waxahachie, and making plans to play that sport in college, Sterns surprised himself and everyone else when he suddenly changed directions and came to McMurry University to play football.

Nov. 6 -- Friday Night Football: List of this week's local/area high school football games

Nov. 6 -- Cross country regional meets Saturday: Area high school cross country runners will compete in 10 regional meets Saturday in Lubbock, Arlington, Pasadena and San Antonio. But the most interesting race will be at Lubbock where two defending state champions square off.

Nov. 5 -- Loss to Permian was key to Cougars', Eagles' season (Al Pickett): Oddly enough, the defining moment in both Abilene High's and Cooper's football seasons may have come on the artificial turf at Odessa's Ratliff Stadium. Both occurred in a loss to Odessa Permian, but the subsequent results sent the Eagles' and Cougars' seasons spinning in opposite directions.

Nov. 5 -- Walker continues to have success for Eagles: It doesn't matter which side of the ball Abilene High head coach Steve Warren puts Michael Walker, the result will inevitably be the same. Successful.

Nov. 5 -- ACU receiver coming into his won this season (Ted Dunnam): Casey Whittle won't ever be confused with Jerry Rice. But if one draws a comparison to Steve Largent, at least you're beginning to get in the same ballpark.

Nov. 5 -- Big quarterbacks come in small packages at Albany (Bill Hart): Don't even try to tell Tony Wayne Wheeler or Albany football fans that he is too small to play quarterback. No one will buy it and they have a 9-0 record to back it up.

Nov. 5 -- Naud and Raby are "protectors" for Aviators: If forward Eric Naud and defenseman Matthieu Raby ordered a pizza, they could have it delivered to the Taylor County Coliseum penalty box.

Nov. 5 -- Jobs for college athletes a non-issue (Al Pickett): One of the "hot button" issues in college athletics earlier this year has actually turned into a non-issue.

Nov. 4 -- Tradition returns: Cougars, Eagles meet in regular season finale (Al Pickett): A long-standing tradition is being revived Friday night. There was a time when the cross-town rival games were always played in the final regular-season game of the year. They were as much a part of the high school football tradition as cheerleaders and marching bands.

Nov. 4 -- Football format for state champs could change (Bill Hart): So you don't like the present format that is used to name Texas high school football state champions? It could change in the next couple of years.

Nov. 4 -- Ford top of the line(backer) for Cooper: The middle linebacker on defense is the equivalant to the quarterback on offense. One of the best defensive signal-callers in District 4-5A is Cooper's Coby Ford.

Nov. 4 -- AHS cross country athlete more dedicated this year: Kristen Adkins runs about 25 miles a week and enjoys every step of the way. That happens when you are successful.

Nov. 4 -- Malfunction causes ice to melt at the Hangar: The Abilene Aviators' first-year woes continued Tuesday when it was discovered that a power surge knocked out the electricity Monday night causing the ice to melt at the Taylor County Coliseum.

Nov. 4 -- "Wave for Walter" scheduled at rivalry game: The Cooper Booster Club is sponsoring a "Wave for Walter" night Friday at the Abilene High-Cooper football game at Shotwell Stadium.

Nov. 3 -- Long run may have cut Zac Allen's career short (Al Pickett): JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Former Cooper all-state quarterback Zac Allen's collegiate football career may have ended a few games sooner than he wanted.

Nov. 3 -- Playoff berths could be riding on that coin toss (Bill Hart): So you thought flipping a coin to determine teams going to the high school football playoffs was a thing of the past after overtime and point systems were introduced.

Nov. 3 -- Katy returns to No. 1 in 5A; Breckenridge still No. 1, too: Katy, which lost the No. 1 spot in Class 5A when it appeared four wins would have to be forfeited, returned to the top Monday following victories off and on the field.

Nov. 3 -- HSU still ranked no. 6 after record-setting day: Despite the fall of five school and five conference records during Saturday's 83-6 victory over Texas Lutheran at Shelton Stadium, Hardin-Simmons University stayed put at No. 6 in the latest NCAA Division III South regional football poll released Monday.

Nov. 3 -- Big Spring Invitational: Here are the results from the Big Spring Invitational swimming meet:

Nov. 2 -- Aviators on hot streak with four wins in four days: The Abilene Aviators had to work on Sunday so they figured the Lord might as well work also. The Aviators shook off a two-goal deficit and scored four goals in 21 minutes off Amarillo goaltender Adam Lord, as Abilene knocked off the Rattlers, 4-2 in front of 2,059 at the Taylor County Coliseum.

Nov. 2 -- Youth sports exciting, to say the least (Candy Reagan): I might not live through my children's years in competitive youth sports. I'm one of those people who is, shall we say, intense, during a game. I sink every bit of emotion into it, and win or lose I usually come out drained.

Nov. 2 -- New tournament format to be decided (Rick Meyers): On November 22, there is a meeting in Austin to decide the new tournament format for junior players. I will also find out the new ranking system Texas will be using. There is no way to tell what we will come up with, but it will be modeled to fit the USTA's tournament schedule.

Nov. 1 -- Aviators win in a shootout: The Abilene Aviators almost let their tempers lead to their first home loss of the season, but Abilene remained perfect with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Austin Ice Bats in front of 2,509 fans at the Taylor County Coliseum.

Nov. 1 -- Eagles defeated in Regional tennis tournament: It's one thing to have confidence when you're expected to win, and something else to have it when you're an underdog.

Nov. 1 -- Abilene Aviators join competition for Mayor's Cup: The Western Professional Hockey League's Western Division just got a little more interesting, as the Abilene Aviators have joined San Angelo and Odessa to compete yearly for the "Mayor's Cup."

Nov. 1 -- Abilene High girls win District cross country meet: CARLSBAD -- The Abilene High girls cross country team won its third straight District 4-5A cross country title Saturday in San Angelo, and Cooper will join AHS at the regional meet Saturday in Lubbock on the strength of its third-place finish.
