Oct. 31 -- ACU
hopes to snap losing streak with new offense: It's no secret what Abilene Christian University
will unveil on offense today.
Oct. 31 -- HSU
has eye on conference championship:
The Hardin-Simmons University football team got part of what it
wanted last week, but there are other battles ahead and other
prizes to be won.
Oct. 31 -- McMurry
faces first of two tests: SHERMAN
-- The steaming hot McMurry University football team has to be
feeling more confident than ever after chief "chef"
Steve Keenum demonstrated his team has more than one winning recipe.
Oct. 31 -- Abilene
High tennis team earns spot in semifinals: For Abilene High, it was like taking candy away
from a baby.
Oct. 30 -- Aviators
back to winning ways against Scorpions:
After playing sluggish the first two periods, the Abilene Aviators
came out in the third period and scored three goals in nine minutes
to knock off the New Mexico Scorpions, 4-2, in front of 2,164
fans at Taylor County Coliseum.
Oct. 30 -- Picking
the Games (Bill Hart): The Wylie
Bulldogs can wrap up a District 6-3A playoff spot with a victory
tonight over Ballinger or next week against Grape Creek.
Oct. 30 -- Wylie,
Ballinger game tonight of critical importance: BALLINGER - This year's Ballinger-Wylie football
matchup may not decide the District 6-3A champion, but the outcome
will still be crucial for both teams.
Oct. 30 -- Cougars
face must-win against Odessa on the road: ODESSA - With numerous playoff possibilities hinging
on tonight's action, the Cooper Cougars face Odessa High at Ratliff
Stadium in a crucial contest.
Oct. 30 -- Eagles
hope history repeats itself against Bulldogs: Abilene High would love to see a repeat of last
year's performance against Midland High when the Eagles meet the
Bulldogs tonight at Shotwell Stadium.
Oct. 30 -- Area
Games: Sweetwater looking to wrap things up, etc.: Just because a team is ranked high in the state
high school football poll doesn't mean a thing to the Sweetwater
Mustangs.
Oct. 30 -- Panthers,
Rebels knocking heads tonight (Jeff Walker): ODESSA - The two Permian Basin powerhouses meet
tonight with playoff implications and bragging rights on the line.
Oct. 30 -- Friday
Football: A complete list of
tonight's local, area high school football
Oct. 30 -- HSU
defensive star named player of the week (Mark Wilson): Dustin Kiser feels comfortable at defensive end,
just as he does being a student at Hardin-Simmons University.
Oct. 30 -- ACHS
Panthers need one more win for playoffs: The playoff formula is pretty easy to figure out
for the Abilene Christian High School football team. Beat either
fourth-ranked Happy Hill Academy tonight or top-ranked El Paso
Jesus Chapel next week, and the No. 2 Panthers (8-1, 2-0) head
to Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools' Six-Man
playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Oct. 30 -- Tennis
tournament begins today: Top-seeded
Abilene High hopes to live up to that billing and earn a state

goaltender to host old team tonight:
When Abilene Aviators' goaltender Tony Martino takes the ice tonight
against the New Mexico Scorpions, he will have extra incentive
to notch his fifth victory of the season.
Oct. 29 -- Former
Stanton state champ training for Olympics here (Bill Hart):
The next year and a half will be
a busy time for Jeremy Stallings. He will be training for the
Olympics, serving as a volunteer coach, being a father and most
of all, supporting his family.
Oct. 29 -- Cooper
defense has improved considerably: The
Cooper football team's offensive weaponry has received much of
the attention from media and fans, and much of the focus from
opposing coaches thus far this season.
Oct. 29 -- A&M-Commerce's
win over ENMU typical of what team could be (Ted Dunnam): Eddie Vowell's armed with a clarification if you
thought his Texas A&M-Commerce football team got untracked
last week against previously unbeaten Eastern New Mexico.
Oct. 28 -- Playing
on one of West Texas' newest golf courses (Al Pickett): Sometimes I think we have it backwards. We battle
the chilly temperatures and blustery winds in the spring and the
scorching heat in the summer to play golf in West Texas, and then
we quit playing as much in the fall as school, football and hunting
occupy more of our leisure time.
Oct. 28 -- Eagles
take No. 2 ranking into weekend tourney:
Everybody's always looking out for No. 1, but if Abilene High
has anything to say about it, you'd better keep a keen eye out
for No. 2.
Oct. 28 -- Cooper
in playoff picture battle; Eagles' Beltran questionable: The District 4-5A playoff picture could become
a lot clearer after this week's games. Odessa Permian, Midland
Lee, Cooper, Midland High and Odessa High are battling for the
top three spots for the postseason, and four of the five play
each other this week.
Oct. 28 -- Tour,
column concludes for another season (Al Pickett): The PGA Tour concludes this weekend with the Tour
Championship. Abilene's Bob Estes is 27th on the money list and
is included the 30-man field for the $4 million season-ending
tournament. Estes, who has earned $922,330 this year, needs to
finish 18th in the Tour Championship to top the $1 million mark
for the first time in his career.
Oct. 28 -- Volleyball
Roundup: Permian beats Lady
Eagles ... Lady Cougars prevail ... Lady Indians triumph
Oct. 27 -- You
want to talk about long field goals? (Al Pickett): The record still belongs in Abilene. Field goals
have been in the news recently. Jason Elam tied Tom Dempsey's
National Football League record, set in 1970, when he booted a
63-yarder in the Denver Broncos' 37-24 win Sunday over the Jacksonville
Jaguars.
Oct. 27 -- Three
teams doesn't make it any easier come playoff time (Bill Hart): It doesn't matter if the teams are in District
7-2A or 8-2A, Hamlin, Stamford, Albany, Jim Ned and Anson seemingly
have a hard time deciding which teams will advance to the playoffs.
Oct. 27 -- Players
of the Week: Here are the area
high school football players of the week as selected by the Abilene
Reporter-News.
Oct. 27 -- Breckenridge
keeps top spot in 3A: Katy,
facing possible forfeits, dropped Monday from 5A's top position
in The Associated Press' high school football poll to No. 3 despite
whipping Rosenberg Terry 41-3 Friday.
Oct. 26 -- You
won't get much sympathy here for whining athletes (Candy Reagan): I'm tired of hearing professional athletes whine
about their rights to privacy. I have trouble feeling sympathy
for someone who makes millions because he's a public figure, but
then wants to turn off publicity at his or her convenience. The
fact is, athletes give up most of their rights to privacy when
they choose to enter the public arena.
Oct. 26 -- Stampede
hand Aviators first loss of season: BELTON
- The Central Texas Stampede defeated the Abilene Aviators in
the first road game of Aviator's history Saturday and handed them
their first loss of the season with a 3-2 final in front of 1,675
fans at the Bell County Expo Center.
Oct. 26 -- Not
a lot of rule changes in tennis (Rick Meyers): Tennis is probably the only sport where there has
been only one major rule change in 75 years, the advent of the
tiebreaker. Some people would say that other sports need major
changes but tennis doesn't. What brings up this subject is that
the International Tennis Federation had been considering abolishing
the let, meaning that a service receiver must play a let serve.
Oct. 25 -- Director
of AFCA eager to see how season turns out: The college football season still has more than
a month to go, but Grant Teaff is eagerly awaiting January and
the Fiesta Bowl.

want to extend winning streak:
The McMurry University Indians are on the verge of history.
Oct. 24 -- Abilene
Christian hopes for first conference win: STEPHENVILLE -- If his team wasn't mired in a three-game
slump, Abilene Christian University head coach Jack Kiser might
have a problem getting his team focused on winless Tarleton State
University.
Oct. 24 -- Coach
leads list of hall of fame inductees:
You probably can't see the walls in Gordon Wood's house because
of all the plaques, certificates, trophies and awards adorning
it.
Oct. 24 -- Aviators
mascot enjoying new job: Colonel
Puck, the Abilene Aviators' mascot is not an import from Canada.
In fact, he is the result of not making the Aviators' roster.

defeat Odessa Jackalopes: Round
one of the I-20 Rumble went to the Abilene Aviators.

Wylie will try to do something tonight that no other team has
been able to do against Brady -- put the ball in the end zone.
Oct. 23 -- Top-ranked
coaches have ties to this area (Bill Hart): It may surprise you to know that at least 15 head
coaches of teams ranked in the Associated Press' top 10 football
poll have ties in this area. It did me.

still just a game (Jeff Walker):
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Friday Night Lights, the
book that was written about football at Odessa Permian High School.
Oct. 23 -- Tonight's
games: A complete list of area
high school football games
Oct. 23 -- ASC
action likely to get players, coaches pumped up: This is one weekend that contending American Southwest
Conference football coaches won't have to worry about looking
ahead.
Oct. 22 -- District
6-3A always a 'dogfight' ... at least recently (Al Pickett): The District 6-3A football race seemingly boils
down to one game each year to decide the district title. And in
most years in this decade, Wylie has been involved in that key
game. The Bulldogs have been to the playoffs four straight years
and six of the last eight years.
Oct. 22 -- Buffaloes
and Javelinas should make it interesting (Ted Dunnam): It was difficult - no, make that impossible - to
refrain from hysterical laughter when Ron Harms said his team
would be an underdog when it plays West Texas A&M Saturday.
Funny thing is, he's right - if you're a hard-core believer in
national rankings.
Oct. 22 -- Aviators
have brain as well as brawn: Abilene
right wing Stephen Maltby is no dummy. A quick view of his transcripts
would confirm that fact. Maltby, who was born in a small town
in New Brunswick, Canada, went to undergraduate school at Yale.
He picked up a double major in psychology and economics.
Oct. 22 -- Cougars
have their own version of the Three Amigos: In the mid-1980's the Denver Broncos had three wide
receivers nicknamed the Three Amigos - Mark Jackson, Vance Johnson
and Ricky Nattiel. This year's Cooper football team could use
the same moniker.
Oct. 22 -- Soccer
Roundup: HSU women win, men
lose
Oct. 21 -- Announcer
pays homage to communities that once had football (Bill Hart): I was listening to the football scores on KVRP
95.5 FM (the radio station in Haskell/Stamford) last Friday night
while driving home from the Early-Winters game when Monty Montgomery
read "Sagerton 34, O'Brien 28."
Oct. 21 -- Aviators
win again, despite penalty box: For
the second consecutive game the Abilene Aviators spent more time
playing with one less player than the opposition. And for the
second consecutive game, it didn't matter.
Oct. 21 -- Local
golfer Brigman weighing his options (Al Pickett): Former Wylie golfer Jaxon Brigman is having to
reconsider his future options after failing to qualify for the
next stage of the PGA Tour qualifying tournament.
Oct. 21 -- CHS
needing healthy linebackers; AHS morale still good: It doesn't pay to be a linebacker at Cooper High
School this season. After losing starters Somdy Vorasane and Paul
Mock for the season earlier this year to knee injuries, the Cougars
will be without the services of middle linebacker Coby Ford this
week after the senior suffered a knee injury in Cooper's 28-25
loss at Odessa Permian last week.
Oct. 21 -- Abilene
has connections to this World Series:
A native Texan - with ties to Abilene - is serving as the official
scorer at this week's World Series games in San Diego.
Oct. 21 -- Volleyball
Roundup: McMurry beats HSU ...
Cameron topples ACU ... Lady Bulldogs top AHS ... Cooper loses
Oct. 20 -- Life
of a professional hockey player can be a much-traveled one: Many people picture professional athletes' personal
life similar to a rock star, filled with groupies and wild partying.
Athletes with families, however, have other responsibilities.
Oct. 20 -- Players
of the Week: Here are the area
high school football players of the week as selected by the Abilene
Reporter-News.
Oct. 20 -- Many
reasons Breckenridge top-ranked (Bill Hart): Why are the Breckenridge Buckaroos ranked as the
state's No. 1 team in Class 3A? One reason is they are ahead of
last year's outstanding pace in numerous categories.
Oct. 20 -- Mart
assumes top spot from Stanton in 2A: Mart
grabbed the top Class 2A spot in The Associated Press' high school
football poll Monday, leading a horde of undefeated teams that
pushed Stanton down to sixth.
Oct. 19 -- Sizing
up the NBA lockout (Candy Reagan):
Hard as I try, I can't work up any sympathy for NBA players. These

it's enough. NBA salaries are definitely out of control, and something
must be done about it.

are usually eyeing something at this point in the season, but
rarely is it their first win in the Lone Star Conference.

is very good at focusing on one game.

of 3,013 fans at the Taylor County Coliseum.
Oct. 16 -- Abilenians
seemed to like their introduction to hockey (Al Pickett): Did you go to the hockey game last night? I certainly

Abilenians did just that Thursday night, attending the first-ever
hockey game in the Key City.
Oct. 16 -- Wylie
Bulldogs travel to Merkel, both teams undefeated in district:
MERKEL - Football practice was
more fun this week at Merkel. After losing their first five games
of the season, the Badgers opened District 6-3A play last week
with a 42-12 victory over Grape Creek.

far proving that last year's 3-6 record (1-5 in District 4-5A)
was just a mirage.

Abilene High football team is celebrating homecoming tonight at
Shotwell Stadium with its backs against the wall.
Oct. 16 -- ACHS

Christian High School football team begins its district schedule
today with a contest at Harvest Christian. The top two teams in
each district make the playoffs.
Oct. 16 -- Blizzards

Country Jamboree Saturday to feature Roscoe cross country star: Girls cross country fans will get a treat Saturday
at the annual Big Country Jamboree. Defending state champion Katherine
Duncan of Roscoe is moving to run today against the Class 3A,
4A and 5A competition, pitting her against some of the other top
runners in this area including Kristen Adkins of Abilene High,
Kelly Garcia of Cooper and Lisa Bull of Wylie. All three went
to state last year.
Oct. 15 -- Aviator's
open at home tonight against Waco: Tonight's
the night. The terms "slapshot," "cross-check"
and "penalty shot" are just a few new words the city
of Abilene will become accustomed to beginning tonight when the
Abilene Aviators open the regular season against the Waco Wizards
at the Taylor County Coliseum.
Oct. 15 -- Eagles,
Cougars need tough showing on defense this week: Abilene High and Cooper may put football's oldest
cliche to a test Friday night. "Defense wins championships"
is football's ancient adage, and defense will certainly be the
key this week for the Eagles and Cougars, who both hold hopes
of winning the District 4-5A championship and earning postseason
playoff berths.
Oct. 15 -- Yankees
... World Series ... deja vu all over again (Al Pickett): So who won the 1961 World Series? We have seemingly
spent an entire summer drawing comparisons to 1961 as Mark McGwire

Saturday and Sunday at Abilene Speedway.
Oct. 15 -- ACU
player is 'jack-of-all-trades' (Ted Dunnam): Benn there, Benn that. Benn there, done that. It's
never been a question of whether you would find Ryan Benn on the
football field for Abilene Christian University, it's just a matter
of where you'd find the 6-2, 190-pound senior.
Oct. 15 -- AHS
grad signs with Cincinnati Reds organization: The advantage of youth is the availability to change
one's mind. Abilene High graduate Odis Dolton has done that, landing
him a baseball contract with the Cincinnati Reds.
Oct. 14 -- Early
finally winning ... well, early (Bill Hart): It is unusual to hear Early High School football
coach Cliff Mitchell laughing and joking at this stage of the
season. But it isn't very often that his Longhorns are 5-1.
Oct. 14 -- Combined

Permian last week, things don't get any easier for the Abilene
High football team.
Oct. 14 -- Margettie
is a tenacious Aviator: It could
be termed the Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde personality. Maybe it's just
that athletes need to have a separate persona away from work.

Roundup: CHS, AHS drop district
games; HSU loses to Midwestern State
Oct. 13 -- Brownwood,
Stephenville didn't disappoint last Friday (Bill Hart): The big sign the Stephenville Yellow Jackets ran

Oct. 12 -- Cowboys
to benefit from lack of competition in NFC East (Candy Reagan): The NFL has an unusual number of pitiful and just-barely-better-than-pitiful

of them. Also fortunate for the Cowboys is that everyone else
in the NFC East is ... pitful, that is.

University and Midwestern State University were flat on the canvas
after last week's losses, looking skyward in disbelief.

in Abilene with the attitude of a bunch of wounded bears coming
off of a 5-1/2-hour bus ride.

... McMurry downs Austin College
Oct. 9 -- Wylie's

Wylie and Clyde may not end up determining the league champion,
but that doesn't mean it won't have a say in the playoff picture.
Oct. 9 -- Cougars
open district play at home against Midland's impressive ground
game: Now comes the fun part.
Cooper head coach Randy Allen has put his Cougars through a rigorous

He will get a chance to see if his strategy paid off beginning
tonight when Midland High comes to Shotwell Stadium for the district
opener.

Williams) and the leading scorer (running back Koefie Powell)
in the district.
Oct. 9 -- ACHS
Panthers hosting Loraine: When
Amarillo Christian High School closed its doors, it presented

complete schedule
Oct. 9 -- Undefeated
Howard Payne finally getting some recognition: BROWNWOOD - If Howard Payne University wasn't one
of the top 30 NCAA Division III football teams in the country
until this week, there should be some awfully salty teams lurking
around when the playoffs begin.
Oct. 9 -- Barrel
regional championship starts today: More
than 600 entries will compete during the next three days at the
Expo Center Coliseum in the Regional Qualifying of the National
Barrel Horse Championship.
Oct. 8 -- Odds
'n' ends as fall and district football finally get here: Al Pickett): A couple of notes on different topics
while being thankful fall-like weather has finally arrived in
time for the high school football district openers Friday...
Oct. 8 -- Revell
Nationals coming up soon (Ted Dunnam):
If the Abilene Shootout Drag Race got your motor revved up for
more of the same, the Revell Nationals is just around the corner.
Oct. 8 -- Some
good may come from ASU's lopsided loss:
The thrashing that Angelo State endured last weekend may be a
blessing in disguise for Rams head coach Jerry Vandergriff.
Oct. 8 -- New
look with some old standards in District 6-3A: Everyone knew the District 6-3A football race was
going to have a different look this season, but some constants
remain.
Oct. 8 -- Parity,
one less team make up District 4-5A this season: Numbers are the biggest change in District 4-5A

Angelo saw the start of two Texas football greats (Bill Hart):

Oct. 7 -- Aviators
lose first exhibition game, 5-1:
AMARILLO - The Abilene Aviators aren't going to take anything
because they are the new kids on the block. Unfortunately for
the Aviators, its was that attitude that cost them their first
exhibition game.
Oct. 7 -- Cameron
wins team title at Coody tourney; ACU fourth: What a difference a day makes. After battling wind

windless fall day Tuesday for the final round of the 14th annual
Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate golf tournament at Fairway
Oaks Country Club.

weather greets golfers at first round of Coody Invitational: At least it didn't snow Monday. If the collegiate

all they had to do was wait around a few minutes and it changed.

- Results of the Cowboy Jamboree cross country meet held last
Saturday at Oklahoma State University (ACU finishes 4th)
Oct. 5 -- The
thrill of victory and the ... uh, you know (Candy Reagan): My 5-year-old son's soccer team learned one of
the fundamentals of sports this past weekend. You win some; you
lose some, and winning is always more fun than losing.
Oct. 5 -- Getting
up-to-date on rules, etc. (Rick Meyers): While receiving phone calls concerning the progress
of ex-high school players who are now playing college tennis,
which will be featured next week, I thought I would bring you
up to date on a few various topics.

it's not the new jet service which is coming to Abilene.

hold doubles tournament (Mae Fraser):

Sul Ross State.

Hawley.
Oct. 2 -- Tonight's
Games: All games at 7:30 p.m.
unless otherwise listed
Oct. 1 -- Abilene
athletes seem to be front runners:
Abilene, home of running backs? The Key City may not have historically
been known as a factory for running backs, but the decade of the
'90s has certainly been one of record-setting performances by
local high school running backs.
Oct. 1 -- Local
sports fans were there for McGwire's 69th, 70th (Al Pickett):
Two Abilenians were eyewitnesses
to history last Sunday. Mike Unger and Mike Schuler were in Busch
Stadium in St. Louis, Mo., Sunday to see Mark McGwire cap off
the greatest season in major league baseball history with his
record-setting 69th and 70th home runs.
