Sept. 16 -- Scramble being held by JNHS Band Boosters (Al Pickett): The Jim Ned High School Band Boosters will sponsor a four-person scramble golf tournament on Oct. 10 at Maxwell Municipal Golf Course.

Sept. 16 -- Top high school football performances: A 400-yard rusher on a losing team and seven-touchdown scorer on a winning team all in the same game highlight the notable high school football performances this past weekend.

Sept. 16 -- Veteran zebra has hung up his stripes (Bill Hart): A familiar face is missing from Texas high school football fields this season. Ray Hudson has hung up his whistle and flag after officiating for the past 37 years.

Sept. 15 -- Cooper quarterback knows exactly how Troy Aikman feels (Al Pickett): Jeremy Janssen and Troy Aikman now have something in common, although it is a comparison that neither would prefer to have.

I include myself in this group because I argued against drafting Moss and watched as he dropped and dropped and dropped in the draft until Minnesota took a chance and picked him up at 21.

Sept. 13 -- Abilene High volleyball team downs Cooper: Abilene High outlasted cross-town rival Cooper, 15-12, 15-6, Saturday in the District 4-5A volleyball opener for both teams at Cougar Gym.

Sept. 13 -- Women's Doubles Tournament starts next week (Mae Fraser): It's again time for the annual 500-600 Club's Scotch Doubles Tournament for women.

Sept. 13 -- PRCA rodeo begins Tuesday night (Lynda Rae): The rodeo at the West Texas Fair begins on Tuesday night with the grand entry starting at 7:30 p.m. It will continue each night through Saturday at the Taylor County Coliseum.

Sept. 13 -- Katy Taylor wins AISD tennis championship: A couple of champions slugged it out Saturday at Rose Park Tennis Center, but when pitting the heavyweight division against the light-heavyweight class, the results are sometimes all-too-predictable.

Sept. 12 -- HSU tries to beat an old rival: WICHITA FALLS -- The Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys will renew a rivalry tonight -- if only for one year -- as they open their football season on the road against a former member of their conference.

Sept. 12 -- Indians hope to learn something from season opener: The McMurry Indians open their football season tonight with a matchup against a team expected to be among the best in the nation in NCAA Division III.

Sept. 12 -- Abilene schools set to battle it out: The District 4-5A volleyball race officially begins today with the cross-town battle between Abilene High and Cooper at Cooper's Cougar Gym.

Sept. 12 -- Cooper tennis team wins, advances to semifinals: Benefitting from several key boys' victories, Cooper moved into the semifinals of the Abilene Independent School District Team Tennis Invitational with an 11-7 quarterfinal win Friday over El Paso Franklin.

Sept. 11 -- Abilenians saw a part of history in St. Louis (Al Pickett): It was either great luck - or bad timing - this weekend for Mark Lavender and Stephen Sharp of Abilene. Either way, it was certainly a weekend that the two will remember for the rest of their lives.

Sept. 11 -- Cougars lose to Waco, 24-10: WACO - Waco High's strength was supposed to be its defense. That was evident Thursday night, but it was the Lions' offense that carried Waco past Cooper, 24-10, at Paul Tyson Stadium.

Sept. 11 -- Eagles face excellent passing team - Temple: After turning in two outstanding defensive performances, Abilene High now faces its first test against a passing team.

Sept. 11 -- Wylie Bulldogs go after first win against tough Graham: GRAHAM - If good work habits and intensity help contribute to victories, the Wylie Bulldogs could be on their way to turning their football season around.

Sept. 11 -- ACHS Panthers will be trying to bounce back: The Abilene Christian High School football coaches will get their first chance to see how their team faces adversity tonight when it faces San Antonio Sunny Brook.

Sept. 11 -- Cisco, Albany game should be one of the best: The Cisco Loboes were stopped twice inside the Early 3-yard line last week in a 13-0 loss, so one would suspect they worked a lot on their goal-line offense for tonight's game at Albany.

Sept. 11 -- Predicting this week's games (Bill Hart): Ever since last February's University Interscholastic League high school district realignment, anyone you talked to said what a disservice was done to Grape Creek.

Sept. 11 -- AISD team tennis tournament brings 14 ranked teams to town: Fourteen ranked teams - including No. 1 Katy Taylor in Class 5A and No. 1 Dallas Highland Park in Class 4A - will vie for the title of the Abilene Independent School District team tennis tournament that begins today and concludes Saturday.

Sept. 11 -- Former ACU great Jim Lindsey dead at age 49: Jim Lindsey, one of the most decorated players in Abilene Christian University football history, died of heart failure late Wednesday night at his home in Colleyville. He was 49.

Sept. 11 -- HSU and McMurry opening football seasons: McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University will become the final two Abilene teams to open their 1998 football seasons this weekend. And both will have tough opponents.

Sept. 10 -- It was definitely a night to remember (Al Pickett): It was amazing. No matter how many times I watched the replay, I couldn't turn off the TV set Tuesday night and again Wednesday morning. I just wanted to soak up more a little more history, to enjoy one more glimpse of Mark McGwire's record-setting 62nd home run.

Sept. 10 -- Cougars to face tough Waco defense: WACO - The Cooper football team will get a good test this week in preparation. After spending all of last week gearing up for an explosive offense, the Cougars must turn its attention to the opposite side of the ball if they are going to record their second victory of the season.

Sept. 10 -- Racing team member organizes fundraiser (Ted Dunnam): A fundraiser for Karis Williams, a third-grader at Wylie Elementary School who is recovering from a malignant brain tumor, has been scheduled from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Mr. Gatti's Family Fun Center located at 2665 Buffalo Gap Road.

Sept. 10 -- New golf course taking shape: The dust is flying is at Abilene's newest golf course. Hopefully by this time next year, however, the only thing in the air will be golf balls, landing on plush greens and fairways.

Sept. 9 -- May's return to 11-man football a successful relief (Bill Hart): Last week had been long one for the May Tigers, who were getting ready for their first 11-man football game in 31 years.

Sept. 9 -- Coody in charitable tourney this weekend (Al Pickett): Abilene's Charles Coody, the 1971 Masters champion and a current member of the Senior PGA Tour, will has lent his name to a charitable tournament this weekend in the Fort Worth area.

Sept. 9 -- Aviators sign center Stephane Roy: The newest team in the Western Professional Hockey League might have received its most recognizable name when the Abilene Aviators signed center Stephane Roy.

Sept. 9 -- Best of the West to face best of the Central: District 4-5A is considered the best football district in West Texas. District 8-5A, home of the Killeen Ellison Eagles (ranked No. 1 in the state), is perenially the top district in Central Texas. Which district is better? We will know more after this week when two teams from District 8-5A face the two schools from Abilene in a pair of intiguing matchups.

Sept. 8 -- HSU soccer team skunks Mary Hardin-Baylor: BELTON - Hardin-Simmons University turned in a huge team effort Monday in a 10-0 rout of Mary Hardin-Baylor in their conference opener.

Sept. 8 -- Lady Cougars win again: The Cooper High School volleyball team won its 12th game of the season Monday with a 15-7, 5-15, 15-12 victory on Monday.

Sept. 8 -- HSU opening volleyball season: Hardin-Simmons University opens its home volleyball schedule Tuesday against Mary-Hardin Baylor and Abilene Christian University.

Sept. 7 -- Experiencing sports history is special (Candy Reagan): All eyes are on baseball this week, and if they aren't, they ought to be. Mark McGwire WILL break Roger Maris' homerun record -- perhaps even today -- and this promises to be one of those really great moments in sports. And I mean really great.

Sept. 7 -- Let's look at the three local tennis teams (Rick Meyers): During the next three weeks we are going to profile the three local high school tennis teams: Cooper High School, Abilene High School and Wylie High School. All three are perennial Top 10-ranked teams in the state.

Sept. 6 -- Bowling officers attend annual workshop (Mae Fraser): Last Sunday, bowlers met at the VFW Post on Kirkwood for their annual officers' workshop. Most of the presidents and secretaries of the coming fall and winter leagues were on hand. It was a very informative workshop.

Sept. 6 -- 'The Girls' hope to have a winning horse (Lynda Rae): Ten women known as "The Girls" invested $1,850 each to buy a racing American Quarter Horse and now they have the fastest qualifier to Monday's $2 million All American Futurity.

Sept. 6 -- HSU Soccer Roundup: SAN ANGELO -- Hardin-Simmons University, led by Jennifer Alford, recorded a 2-1 win Saturday over College of the Southwest.

Sept. 5 -- Wildcats face uncertainties in season opener: WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- More answers than questions -- that's what Abilene Christian University head coach Jack Kiser hopes he has after the Wildcats' college football season opener today against Southwestern Oklahoma.

Sept. 5 -- Abilene Western wraps up: Little Belly Dancer took top honors in the 4-year-old Open Derby class of the Abilene Western Friday with a 223 point performance that came in the middle of the one set of 14 entires.

Sept. 4 -- Look for Cooper game to be rough, tough and long: Be sure to load up with plenty of food at the concession stand prior to the kickoff of the Cooper-Killeen game at Shotwell Stadium. You will probably need some nourishment because tonight's season opener could be a long game.

Sept. 4 -- Wylie Bulldogs facing highly ranked Breckenridge: Even though Wylie has a one-game head start on Breckenridge, the Buckaroos don't need any sympathy for their situation as they prepare for their football game tonight at Bulldog Stadium.

Sept. 4 -- Last week's shutout was a rare one for Eagles (Jeff Walker): After having a few days to soak in his team's 20-0 season-opening victory over Amarillo Tascosa, Abilene High head coach Steve Warren still couldn't recall when the last time AHS posted a shutout. 4-5A Predictions

Sept. 4 -- ACHS Panthers facing 13th-ranked Rochester: The Abilene Christian High School football team will face a big challenge in just the second week of its season at 7:30 p.m. tonight when the team travels to face No. 13 Rochester.

Sept. 4 -- 'America's Team' beats the Aussies at cutting: America's Team - for this week at least and in the cutting arena - prevailed over the Australians at the Non-Pro Team Challenge event by a slender 15 points.

Sept. 3 -- It's simple Friday: Drive toward the lights (Al Pickett): Thousands of high school football fans will be on the road Friday night to watch their favorite team in action, many of whom will be making their first trek to a foreign stadium.

Sept. 2 -- Prairie Dogs future includes Abilene ... at least for next year: Will the Prairie Dogs be back next year? That question has seemingly been asked every year since minor league baseball returned to Abilene in 1995.

Sept. 2 -- Injuries already impact AHS, CHS football programs: Injuries have already made a direct impact on both of Abilene's 5A football teams.

Sept. 2 -- New Hawley course to hold first tournament (Al Pickett): When you have a new golf course, there are always a series of "firsts." Tangle Oaks Golf Course, located six miles northeast of Hawley, opened last spring and will hold its first tournament, a two-person scramble, on Sept. 26-27. Cash prizes will be awarded.
