for another season, the school's athletic director said Tuesday. Though the Cougars limped to a second straight 3-8 finish,
including 2-4 in Conference USA play, athletic director Chet Gladchuk
said in an interview with Houston radio station KTRH-AM that Helton
will remain. "We have great expectations by the coach and by the university
... to be a champion, to have a winning season next year,"
Gladchuk said. "Kim assures us that will be the case." Helton, who has three years remaining on his contract, said
speculation about his status could have dampened recruiting had
it persisted. "I'm glad it's cleared up and we can go about the business
of recruiting and we can go into next season," Helton said. Gladchuk made it clear he expects success in 1999 from Helton's
Cougars, saying the "stars are lined up properly for a big
season." There was speculation that the Cougars' rotten finish, including
a loss to previously winless Cincinnati this month, might have
endangered Helton. However, Gladchuk said his job was to "look
at the bigger picture." Houston won the inaugural C-USA title in 1996 but has struggled
since, partially under the weight of a brutal schedule. Three
losses this season came against No. 1 Tennessee, No. 3 UCLA and
No. 11 Tulane, three of the only four remaining undefeated Division
IA teams.
