to repair a torn ligament in his left wrist and is expected to
be out at least two months. Howell, hurt Tuesday in Montreal during a collision with the
Expos' Vladimir Guerrero, at first was thought to have dislocated
a wrist bone. That injury could have sidelined him for the season. A second look Wednesday after Howell returned to Houston revealed
the ligament tear and surgery to repair the damage was successful,
Dr. Tom Mehlhoff said. Howell had been starting in place of Jeff Bagwell, who went
on the 15-day disabled list last week with a lacerated right knee.
Howell was placed on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday. J.R. Phillips was called up from the team's AAA affiliate in
New Orleans to take over at first base. Bagwell is expected to
return in about a week.
