Converse Judson hopes to capitalize on No. 1 ranking

By The Associated Press

Bragging rights for Class 5A are up for grabs.

Converse Judson High School is on top in the high school football rankings, only after state defending champion Katy was ordered to forfeit one game for playing an ineligible player.

Both schools are among five Class 5A teams that have won all eight games they've played. But last week, a district executive committee ordered Katy to forfeit four more.

That was enough to drop Katy to third place in the 5A rankings, even though Katy received more first-place votes than Judson or second-ranked Killeen Ellison.

On Tuesday, the UIL state executive committee threw out the local ruling, and Katy's record improved to a respectable 7-1.

This weekend, Judson hosts San Antonio Roosevelt while Killeen Ellison (7-1) is at Waco and Katy hosts Alief Elsik. The other three other 8-0 teams in the 5A top ten: No. 5 Tyler Lee, No. 7 Euless Trinity and No. 8 The Woodlands.

In Class 4A, top-ranked La Marque is one of seven undefeated teams. La Marque (6-0) is at Galena Park on Friday. No. 2 West Orange-Stark (8-0) plays Port Arthur Jefferson and No. 3 Andrews (8-0) battles Sweetwater.

Breckenridge (8-0) and ranked at the top of Class 3A teams, plays Comanche. The only other unbeaten teams in the 3A Top Ten are fourth-ranked Waco La Vega, which plays at China Spring, and 10th-ranked Crane, which plays Kermit.

In Class 2A, top-ranked Mart is at Riesel, with No. 2 Winters at Mason, No. 3 Pilot Point at S&S Consolidated, and No. 4 Spearman at Canadian. Also unbeaten are fifth-ranked Iraan and ninth-ranked Holliday. Stanton, the defending 2A state champion, was at the top of the rankings, but a loss took care of that.

Eight of the 10 Class 1A ranked teams are still undefeated. Tenaha will try to protect its No. 1 ranking with a game at Carlisle Price. No. 2 Iola is at Milano and No. 3 Aspermont is at Paducah.
