Texas Leaguer hits four homers in one game

By HARRY KING Associated Press Writer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Tyrone Horne was as baffled as anyone.

"Honestly, there's no explanation for this," he said.

After all, it's not every night he hits four home runs and knocks in 10 runs.

He also completed a home run cycle for Arkansas Travelers on Monday night in San Antonio - a two-run homer in the first inning, a grand slam in the second, a solo homer in the fifth and a three-run homer in the sixth.

"I was just in a groove," he said. "I didn't know what I was doing. I'm just shocked."

The Travelers, a St. Louis Cardinals farm team, beat the San Antonio Missions 13-4 in the Class AA Texas League game.

Horne, who finished 4-for-5, came up to bat again in the eighth inning with two men on base, but Jeff Kubenka struck him out.

"I could hear (the crowd)," the 27-year-old left fielder said. "I wanted to hit five but it wasn't meant to be."

Horne, who leads the Texas League with 110 RBIs and is tied for the lead with 26 homers, tried to build on his feat Tuesday night in a home run derby before the league's All-Star game.

"I've never seen anyone hit four homers in a game," Missions manager Lance Parrish said. "It was impressive. He'll have something to talk about for a while."

The last player to hit four homers in a Texas League game was Tom Brunansky, who later played with the Minnesota Twins. Horne becomes the sixth Texas League player to homer four times in one contest. The Texas League record is eight set in 1902 by Nig Clarke of Corsicana.

"I have hit two before in Double-A, but never four in any league," said Horne, whose homers came with the wind blowing in the pitcher-friendly Wolff Stadium. "I'll call everyone (and tell them about this)."

Horne was drafted out of high school in Troy, N.C. He played last season with the Florida Marlins' affiliate, the Kane County Cougars in the Class A Midwest League, hitting .306 with 21 home runs and 91 RBIs.
