of Fame basketball player Calvin Murphy on charges that he lied
on his time sheets while working as the city's youth athletic
director. "A big boulder just came off my shoulder," Murphy
said after the decision. "I think I could dunk right now.
I haven't dunked in years, but I think I could dunk right now." Murphy, who played for the Houston Rockets from 1970-83 and
holds the NBA record for best free-throw shooting percentage in
a season, was accused of claiming overtime for days he was out
of town serving as an analyst on Rockets broadcasts. The city declined to renew Murphy's $50,000-a-year contract
when it expired in May. He began working for the city in July
1996. Murphy testified before the grand jury earlier this week for
about four hours. Former mayor Bob Lanier had been ready to testify for Murphy,
but the grand jury reached its decision first. "The grand jury made a decision that no indictment was
appropriate ... without hearing from Mayor Lanier or any of the
other witnesses who were going to testify on Calvin's behalf,"
said Murphy's attorney, Richard Trevathan. "They could see
that Calvin broke no laws of the state of Texas." City officials have vowed to revamp the athletics program after
a performance audit accused contract and temporary employees of
claiming hours they didn't work and alleged that a sports program
director had circumvented city purchasing procedures. The city's Office of the Inspector General also is looking
into similar time sheet allegations regarding the city's youth
soccer program. For his part, Murphy vowed to continue working with the city's
youth through other programs. "The children of this city will never get rid of me,"
he said.
