Murphy speaks out about city athletics probe

HOUSTON (AP) -- NBA Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy says a probe into his work as the Houston youth athletic director has left him angry.

Murphy spoke at length Friday about the investigation that ended July 17 when a grand jury failed to indict him. He was accused of claiming time for days he was out of town serving as an analyst on Houston Rockets broadcasts.

"My reputation has been tarnished and soiled," said Murphy, who played for the Houston Rockets in 1970-83 and holds the NBA record for best free-throw shooting percentage in a season. "My family has been affected greatly by this."

The probe began after media reports surfaced that Murphy, who had a $50,000 annual contract with the city, claimed time when he actually was working Houston Rockets games. The city declined to renew Murphy's contract.

Murphy directed most of his anger toward the media, whom he invited to hear him ventilate on Friday.

"I understand people having to do their jobs, but I don't understand people not giving the benefit of the doubt to someone that has served this city," Murphy said.

Murphy explained that he filled out time cards the way he was instructed to. He said that because he was a salaried employee, the time cards were merely a formality and not to be taken as a literal representation of his work time.

City officials have vowed to revamp the athletics program. The city's Office of the Inspector General is looking into similar time sheet allegations regarding the city's youth soccer program.
