Athletic Conference on Thursday upheld the two-game suspension
imposed on the Prairie View A&M University marching band for
a brawl that ensued with the Southern University band at a Sept.
19 football game. "By a unanimous vote, the Appeals and Constitutional Compliance
Committee of the Southwestern Athletic Conference has upheld the
league commissioner's September 21 ruling suspending the marching
band of Prairie View A&M University for two consecutive games
following a September 19 altercation in Beaumont, Texas,"
the conference said in a brief statement. "In upholding the commissioner's ruling, the Appeals and
Constitutional Committee unanimously found that the commissioner
acted properly and within the scope of his authority," the
conference said. SWAC's Council of Presidents, comprised by the president's
of the league's 10 member schools, will decide whether to impose
sanctions for Prairie View's defiance of the suspension, according
to Assistant SWAC Commissioner Lonza Hardy. The Southern University band complied with the two-game suspension
imposed on its band by SWAC Commissioner Rudy Washington but,
after sitting out a Sept. 26 game against Langston, the Prairie
View band took to the field Oct. 3 game against Grambling State
in Dallas. By coincidence, Prairie View's football team snapped an NCAA
record 80-game losing streak with its 14-12 victory over Langston.
A week later, the Panthers dropped a 55-40 decision to Grambling. Prairie View repeatedly has cited its football contract with
Grambling for its apparent defiance of the band suspension. A
copy of the contract, obtained by The Associated Press under the
Texas Open Records Act, clearly states Prairie View could have
faced an $80,000 penalty if its band failed to perform. Prairie View's appeal of the suspension was heard at a meeting
Tuesday in New Orleans, where the conference is headquartered.
