Mistakes cost Rangers another win over Oakland

By ROB GLOSTER

Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. - Jimmy Haynes pitched seven strong innings and the Oakland Athletics, taking advantage of three Texas baserunning mistakes, defeated the Rangers 7-5 Sunday to avoid a four-game series sweep.

Haynes (7-3), who won a career-high third straight decision, allowed two unearned runs on nine hits and was helped by two Texas runners getting thrown out at the plate and one at third.

The Rangers closed to 7-5 in the ninth on pinch-hitter Mark McLemore's infield RBI single and a two-run double by pinch-hitter Domingo Cedeno. But Bill Taylor struck out Roberto Kelly with a man on for his 19th save.

Kevin Mitchell had a pair of RBI singles and Rickey Henderson and Mike Macfarlane added run-scoring singles for Oakland, held to a total of three runs in the first three games of the series.

Matt Stairs added a sacrifice fly, Mike Blowers had a run-scoring groundout and another run scored on a passed ball by All-Star catcher Ivan Rodriguez as the A's scored one in the fifth, four in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Darren Oliver (4-7) retired the first 13 Oakland batters, then fell apart. He got just two more outs, leaving in the sixth after allowing five runs and five hits with three walks. Oliver has given up five or more runs in six of his last eight starts.

Texas scored two runs in the eighth on sacrifice flies by Kelly and Will Clark.

The Rangers, who had a five-game winning streak snapped, ran into three outs in the early innings.

Clark was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on Juan Gonzalez's double in the first. Gonzalez, who leads the majors with 101 RBIs but has not driven in a run in four games since the All-Star break, slammed his helmet to the ground in frustration.

In the fifth, Rusty Greer singled and Rodriguez doubled into the left-field corner. Greer, who ran through third-base coach Jerry Narron's stop signal, was thrown out at the plate and Rodriguez was caught trying to reach third. Luis Alicea followed with a single to center, magnifying the baserunning mistakes.
