Texas, after all. Oakland stopped the Rangers' four-game winning streak, overcoming
Juan Gonzalez's 300th career homer to beat Texas 8-4 Saturday
night. Texas, which had won eight of 11 coming in, began the night
two games ahead of second-place Anaheim in the AL West. The Angels,
who played a late game against Seattle, start a three-game series
against Texas on Monday in California. Ben Grieve went 3-for-4 and Matt Stairs drove in two runs as
the Athletics took a 6-0 lead and stopped their five-game losing
streak. Aaron Sele (18-11) lasted just 3 1-3 innings and probably lost
his chance to win 20 for the first time. Sele allowed four runs
and eight hits, leaving with the Rangers behind 4-0. Grieve, who'd missed his three previous starts because of a
sore ankle, was back in the lineup in his hometown against the
team he rooted for as a kid. Grieve is 13-for-37 against Texas
this season and 17-for-44 for his career. Ryan Christenson also had three hits for the A's, who had 17
hits against six pitchers. Jimmy Haynes (11-8) took a shutout into the sixth before allowing
Gonzalez's 44th homer of the season. Haynes wound up giving up
three runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. Gonzalez's homer came on his 4,239th career at-bat, the fifth-fewest
ever behind Babe Ruth (3,630), Ralph Kiner (3,833), Mark McGwire
(3,837) and Harmon Killebrew (3,928). Gonzalez has 154 RBIs, the
most since Boston's Ted Williams and Vern Stephens each had 159
in 1949. Mike Simms hit a pinch three-run homer in sixth off Mark Holzemer
as Texas closed to 6-4. Stairs then doubled home a run in the
eighth off Danny Patterson. Oakland took a 2-0 lead in the first on Christenson's RBI double
and Jason Giambi's run-scoring single, and made it 4-0 in the
second on Grieve's run-scoring single and Mike MacFarlane's RBI
double. Miguel Tejada singled in a run off Al Levine in the fifth and
Stairs singled in anothjer in the sixth off Tony Fossas. Notes:
Gonzalez is the 81st player to reach 300 homers. ... Sele had
won his previous five decisions. The start was Sele's shortest
of the season. He lasted 3 2-3 innings on May 29 at Baltimore.
... Haynes had lost three of his previous four decisions.
